|
|
door was working fine before it spent the last 3 months out in the garage me working on it when i had time
the driver side door creaks hard and wants to bind up when i open it.... it was fine until it spent sometime sitting in the garage
i might have left the door at half open for a week or so by accident.
there is a little bit of play in the two hinge pieces on the bottom hinge and the door sags a little.
i have no idea where the dent came from, maybe from opening the door once it started to give me problems ???
there is some rust around the bottom hinge in the pillar.
put some heat on it and sprayed it good with PB blaster.
am i looking at replacing the door hinge or is it something else ?

I can absolutely see the dent in the door and tell you that you have a frozen hinge. If it is too frozen heat might not work and you will have to drill out the pin. Cut the head off and drill out from the top.

Reminds me of the passenger door in my '70 when I bought it in 1972. I was pretty poor then, I tried to check EVERYTHING. I missed the passenger door, it creaked like Herman Munster's front door.
I'd oil it up (engine oil) every few days (the recess hole at the top), and work it back and forth hundreds of times. It took me several months of that to get that smooth and quiet. This was in Arizona, and my guess is that the guy's wife had NEVER ridden in it, so just the driver.
The other thing I missed checking: the radio worked fine, I pushed the buttons. Later I found that the radio slide wire was broken, so had to fix that.
So very tough to check "everything"... _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Had a similar issue with a '69 I bought, thought the doors was stiff, let it sit in the garage a few months in Northern NV and one day the door would not open at all. Sprayed WD40 on the hinge pins every day for a week or two and kept trying the door until it finally moved a bit, kept up with the penetrating oild (tried a few brands over the weeks) and today the door is good as new, I also make certain the plastic plugs are in place and oil every so often. _________________ 1969 Beetle (Just finished a complete pan off restoration, SWEET! Qwerty.
I had the same problem with my '70 when I bought it. I tried every penetrating oil I could get my hands on. Nothing worked. I finally bit the bullet and bought a hinge-pin press and removed the pin. Even with the proper tool it took some effort. After I got it out, I hit it with a wire-wheel and it cleaned up nice. Next I took a small diameter wire brush from my gun cleaning kit and scrubbed the holes where the pin sits until no more rust came out. Oiled up the pin and pressed it back in. Now it's like new. No more binding at all. Maybe someone in your area has the tool and would be willing to help? _________________ 70 & 77 Bugs, 71 & 72 Supers

new lower hinges are on the way from cip1 ( well at least the website says they were in stock.... we will see , because everyone else was out of them with no restock date.
will have to order some plastic plugs for the holes.
looking for a lube that will stay and not allow them to rust waterproof and not a mess. white grease maybe ??? _________________ 68 swing axle baja ( making 4x4s look stupid )

I had the same proble with mine-----------hard to poen and squeeking and penetrating applied to the ourside didn't help much so with the door open I took a 1/8" drill bit and drilled into the tab that was supposed to turn in the pin. I drilled at a downward angle until I hit the pin and then sprayed penetrating oil into the holes. Problem solved and I just add a little oil on occasion.

There should be little plastic caps on the top "hole" on each hinge. This keeps water out and also"holds" a small reservoir of oil to keep the hinge lubricated.
Mix up a 50/50 mix of Acetone (home depot, Lowes) and ATF (auto trans fluid) and fill each recess, let it sit for a few days and move the door, reapply frequently and soon the hinge will be loose.
I also applied liberally to all rubbing surfaces you can access on the hinges.
When I got my 74 I couldn't open either door without great effort. A simple application of this and shortly.....well.......days......and all was well. I purchased the plastic caps and keep them oiled now. Rusty oil is still oozing out almost three years later.

Just a photo to show the scroll on the hinge pin to allow lubrication to flow down around pin. I agree, PB blaster or home brew liquid wrench applied and reapplied to the oil reservoir at the top of hinge and keep the caps on.
