Since about June of last year, my dad and I have decided to build a baja bug as my highschool car. I was planning on making a simple TRD prerunner, however the idea of a baja bug appealed to me. We bought a Baja that had been started and not finished, but we decided it wasn't in good enough shape to repair. So we decided to Build our own, using some of the donar car's parts. We also decided to change our plan of using a normal 1835 VW motor and went with a 2.2L Ecotec
( pictures coming soon, my file of the donar car got lost, so i have to get my dads)

Wink Welcome to the Samba young man and wecome to VW's.... My son helps me wrench on stuff like go carts, motorcycles, ect... Last summer he bugged me to get my rail runnin and go for a ride before he moved with his mom. Well it didnt happen, but we did get it runnin and i eventuall drove for the first time the next day. Well, he's back and im ordering parts so we have stuff to wrench on together. My son is 10 and im hopefully teaching him life long lessons. Pay attention to your old man, you just might find some words of wisdom in all the nonsense he says.... lol Best of all, its gonna be some of the best times of your life. Eh?

The car that we have been building is a '62 ragtop with a Crumco chasis.
Crumco also build our roof-rack aswell as our rear arms.
The majority of the parts that we have aquired are from the multiple donar cars we have purchased. We found donar cars to be a way to cut down the price of the ultimate product substantially.
After getting the motor and tranny mounted, we wanted to do some sheet metal work on the body. This is the second time that we have had the car down to only the basics. Even though i was informed that we would be taking the car apart many times in the build, it is kind of frustrating to see all of the previous work on the car undone.

Very nice! I got into vws when I was in highschool too, spent a lot of time wrenching on them with my father, who had a mid-late 60s bug when he was young, my mother also had a super she bought new back in the day, now my long time gf (6 years) bought her first VW, its a 63 Baja, I guess they run in the blood : b

I'll be posting a thread for ours this weekend, its good to see more ppl from CA, what part are you in? I'm about 45 north of SF on the 101, need to find some VW pals in my area to mess around/ help/advice

This is kind of where we are at. If i am not mistaken this is with a '71 body on it, however we are changing it to a 62 ragtop.

We used an electric screwdriver with a sanding attachment on it to carve out these holes in the fiberglass hood.

Sorry for all of the different sized images. If anybody knows how to make them all the same, that would be helpful. Some were taken with a camera and others were taken with me or my dad's (not so smart-)phones.

Where'd you pick up that roof rack? Is it a custom Fab or is it production? Still looking at options for mine

Just an update-
At the moment we have the body off the car and the car flipped upside down.
We are drawing out the plans for the tabs that will hold the aluminum plate that we are putting in for our floor.
Hopefully we can get this done quickly, I don't like seeing the car upside down. Mad
I hope it never sees this position once it is finished.
