Pretty crazy..... Maybe they will get their degrees and develope some new stuff for the rest of us vw guys |
Funny you should mention that, because I've been thinking of some suspension stuff for off road applications _________________ Vehicles:

Had to look that one up... But that would be sweet. Bolt in a-arm kit for a baja bug... I like that idea

We have been working on getting the car ready for plumbing and wiring the last few weeks. Con took the front of the car apart (again) so I could tab the front end for removable aluminum panels, do some sheet metal work on the body and finish welding the kick panel.
We will order up the aluminum tomorrow and get it fitted asap so the car can head to Dave's for wiring the first weekend in March.
The small stuff is taking forever but it looks like it should be on the road in early April!
I would also like to say Thank You to Bob at West Coast Bug and Baja for keeping us in parts ( tabs and gauges this time) and Tom at Enginewiring.com for the great job and fast turn around on our harness and computer.
Con will post some pictures soon on the progress. That's it for now. _________________ Cheers!

Hopefully you will be able to do Mojave road with us this year, if not we do a night run in June. Still trying to get the clamps. I'll talk to you in the next few days. |

I don't think it has ever been addressed before my dad's post, but my name is Connor for anybody who didn't know.
The last few days has been full of welding, and since I am a sub-par welder I didn't have a lot to do. However, My dad made some progress on the car while I was disassembling the front end... again.
One of my dad's friends reccomended a fabricator that is good with aluminum to do all of the sheeting on the front of the car. We tabbed the front of the car in preparation for him to come.
Although it doesn't look like much, all of these little things take hours to do. Maybe on our next car (my dad wants one) things will go by faster since we will know what we are doing.
This strip attatches the body to the chassis so that there is no breeze coming into the car. |

That sounds good Bob. Not much to look at right now but it should be reassembled in a week or so and ready for a trailer ride. (wiring and plumbing)
We have been checking out pictures of last years Mojave Rd run and hope that we can get enough miles on the car (to tune and work out bugs) before this years trip to feel comfortable heading out on an epic adventure with the So Cal Baja club. _________________ Cheers!

Thanks Brian for helping us out with the Aluminium work on the front end. Now we have to figure out where to put the front tire mount and lay a bead of silicon; then the front end should be almost entirely water tight. We had plans to get it off to Dave's for wiring yesterday but my dad had to work overtime because we had a storm come through. Im pretty sure we will get to finish mounting the dash now before we send it off. I feel like this project is nearing an end, I'm sure there is alot more that I have yet to find out though.

Yea Snappy, this project was supposed to be finished 6 months ago. Everything takes so much longer than expected.
Right now the car is over at our friend Dave's house and he is doing all of the wiring for us. He has wired a bunch of cars and we are confident that he will do a much nicer job that ourselfs. When I look through the threads it seems like a lot of cars struggle with wiring, and we do not want that same experience.
Yesterday we got the wiring harness and fuse box mounted, Now we just have to wait on switches and gauges to come in. We are going to have around 12 toggle switches mounted on the dash- I feel like that is so many...
We aren't going to be able to finish up the project by the end of this school year, but I think there is a chance that I will be able to drive it to school as long as everything goes smoothly from here on out. |

This is from the top of my head, so I might be missing a few, but we have toggles for: Turn Signals, Windshield Wipers, Headlights, Dust Light, Reverse Light, Whip Light, Dome Light, Dash Lights, Roof Rack Lights, Front Bumper Lights,
Here are some pictures of the process we took to get the dash figured
We laid out a rough estimate of where we wanted the gauges to go
We covered the dash in masking tape so that we could take measurements and draw on it
We cut out the holes where the gauges were going using some different sized hole saws and a sand paper attachment for the drill
Gauges in place, not perfect yet. Some adjustments are needed. We also added two 12v plugs into the bottom of the dash for phone chargers.
Our friend Dave has been helping us out with the wiring, but it is such a broad field I was struggling to get pictures that I liked, I think I will just get a few when it it finished.
Our friend Brian has been working on the brake lines and teaching me how to bend the brake lines in the right spots
Thank you to everybody that is helping us out on this project! |

Hello everybody,
As i'm nearing the end of my Senior year, I have a big AP Calculus project due. I want to use this car as the main part of the project but I need something more exact.
One of the things that the project requires is a pretty deep use of Calculus level or higher mathematics.
I was thinking about something that had to do with the Suspension in the car, but I am very open to other ideas. If anybody has an idea for this project please feel free to PM me or respond on this thread.
Thanks alot. |

You could do something with calculating spring rates for your shocks or something. I know we used some pretty good calc in my vibrations class back in College.... We had to do tons of stuff on springs. |

Alright, thank you. I'll look into formulas for the springs |

Look up theile parameters for speaker box design. Back in the day...86-88 I uses to do all these calculations by hand. Now we have computers. It can be huge task if you do it by hand. Vas, Vts, free air resonance. Etc. _________________ 62 vert

Awesome on the first stat up, always a great feeling.
For your project you could figure out the rising rate of the rear suspension. It is cantilevered and the speed the shock compresses changed in the stroke, just a thought. That is the way older twin shock long travel bikes were.

Just a quick update: We are going to be able to drive the car onto the trailer this evening, and then tomorrow morning the car is going away to get an exhaust mounted. I'm hoping to be able to drive it in the near future |
