Cool find super ! Im guessing you had to reinstall some of the numbers and decals? Did you put some type of glass in the rear or drive it without? Cool find love it! I wonder how many other OG Herbies are still out there?

disneyherbie, for those of us who are curious (I'm assuming I'm not the only one), can you explain the dimensions of the widened steel wheels on your original Herbie(s)?

I'm wondering about total width & offset of the wheels, and the tire size you're running.

I've always loved the look of the original Herbie with the widened steelies and no hubcaps. I'm now considering replacing the Empi 5-spokes on my '66 with a similar setup.

Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

Cars in The Love Bug had a couple different widths. Usually 15x5.5 or 15x6. My Herbie, Car #6 currently has a set of 15x6s that came off of one of the Herbies in Herbie Fully Loaded. Offset wise, it's stock. All the width is to the outside of the wheel. I run 195/60R15s up front and 205/60R15s in back. [/img]

Awesome, thank you sir. I appreciate the thorough explanation and the picture. Your car looks great!

Vintagevolks- yes I basically just replaced stuff that had been taken off for the sequel or gone missing over the years. The rear window in the movie was plexi but was obviously damaged in the rollover during filming. I dont plan on replacing it because of damage to the area. The car only gets driven around the neighborhood to keep thugs operational and circulating. Herbie is really more of a "display piece/prop" than a usable car these days. I just do my best to give him a good home in his retirement! Of the original franchise movies, there are only about 22-24 originals left. Factor in the horrid Lindsay Lohan remake and the made for TV movie and that number doubles. Obviously the earlier the movie, the fewer survived. Less than half of the original 11 cars from The Love Bug are still around.

Here's a website that lists them.

I thought I would update everyone here on this model. It is currently in production and will hopefully be released by the end of the year. I worked with Mattel to ensure the car was as accurate as possible. We used colors, measurements, parts, etc from my car in the process. (Minus the dents of course!) Models will be available in 1:43 and 1:18 scales.

Anybody score one of the Mattel Hot Wheels Elite Herbies yet? They should be in most hobby stores by now. The first release will be from the first movie-The Love Bug...

Check ebay. There are some vendors who bought in bulk that are undercutting MSRP and offer free shipping...

Sadly, it's put away for the winter, since I'm in Western PA. The good news, however, is that you will be able to see the car in all it's HD glory this year in the upcoming documentary The Bug Movie by filmmaker Damon Ristau! Keep an eye out for it. We filmed a pretty neat segment with Herbie here last summer...

Now that the car is back in PA, you should bring it to The All Aircooled Gathering in September.
