I want to check the wiring connector to the sending unit for corrosion, etc. Is there a way to reach up to the wiring connector, disengaging it and reconnect it while the tank is in place? Also where does the other end of the grounding wire connect to?

My fuel gauge has been reading 3/4 full after I've topped off the tank and have read a fair amount regarding grounding issues, corrosion, etc.

Just want to see if there's anything I can do before I take the step in dropping the tank.

Thanks

I think with the l/f tire removed, you could get your hand in there. But not sure how much room you'd have for actually checking anything. The harness is quite short at the tank. That said, you could check the gauge prior to the sender.

Here is a useful thread for testing with fixed resistors.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=465972

Looking at page 97.209 you can see the current path for the fuel gauge. You could test the gauge at the fusebox at E5. You'd temporarily remove the wire from the fusebox "E" connector. You'd then ground that fusebox pin with one of the above resistor values and then verify the gauge matches the table linked above. If you get the correct readings, you know your problem is between the fusebox and the sender.

Note, it takes a special tool for popping a pin out of the fuesbox harness plugs.

In my experience, you will need to tilt the rear of the tank down a tad to gain meaningful access.

Be very careful with the fragile vent lines and the fuel inlet pipe seal.

The ground for the sender is roughly under the drivers seat. Just a phillips head screw. Basically it is inaccessible with the tank installed.
There is a ground thread found in the FAQ section which has a photo of the exact location.

This fuel sender ground also has the ground wire for the automatic gear indicator light.
If you have an automatic and suspect a bad ground tap into the ground wire in the shifter area and make a new one, both wires are crimped in the same terminal.
