Is it an original plate? Post pics to be sure. My early '55 is stamped. I never seen one without stampings.

Here is a sample. On a car from 56, there is no stamp near the "baujahr".

From 1 October 1954 until 12 August 1960 only German-market cars had the year stamped in the "Baujahr" block. The block was left blank on all VWs produced for export during this period.

My Nov '54-built, U.S. market VW does not have a year stamped in the "Baujahr" block.

Reviving an old thread, but my '55 has a VIN number indicating it was built in May, 1955. Yet it has a number stamped in the BUJAHR field "1255".

I assume the 55 means the 1955 model year. But what is the 12?

Edit: Never mind. Turns out what I though was a 12 must be a 19. So it is just stamped "1955"...because it is a 1955 model. DUH! But its interesting that it is stamped, even though the car appears to be U.S. Spec...no hint of semphors...but maybe I should use a magnet on the B-pillar to check more closely?

If the bullets are original, this car could have been a tourist or Serviceman's car delivered in Germany, but built to U.S. specs. Home-market VWs do not necessarily have the "Made in Western Germany" tag affixed under the data plate before 1960.

My May '55 has the year stamped into the Vin plate. No sign of semaphores, mph speedo not kph but its also been customized by previous owners. Any does the year stamping (font) appear to be factory original? I filled the lettering with pencil lead to make it more legible for the tag agency.
