hi there all. theres a 412 wagon and 411 i think.....coupe if i recall correctly at my local junkyard and they appear to be slated size reduction therapy in a couple months. they are very complete its just there bodies could give the titanic a run for it money.
anywho just wondering if anyone needs parts or what not from them.
will get pics sometime later this week.

found one pic of the 412 on my drive. will take more once the snow melts off them in a few days

That's the rare slantnose version. I may be interested in 411 parts.

I need both seat recliner majjiggers( the knob and the actual rod that makes the seats recline) The under dash cardboard piece. Let me know.

If you can let us know what models you see ( two door, four door, wagon ) and whether its 411 or 412. I am in des Moines Iowa......only a hop, skip and a sled ride from cheese curd land!
I may be in the market for some spare 412 front Fenders (any model) and always in the market for spare 2 door parts like 4 speed tranny and shifter parts and rear fenders. Ray

Dr Tram.....do you mean carpet floormats? Ill have to check the original parts catalog. Oddly in all of my 411.s and 412.s I have never seen actual carpeted floor mats. They all have the carpet inserts from factory....which is one large piece up front spanning both footwell wilth cut out for shifter etc and a similar one for rear. The onlymay kits I have ever seen were the three piece original rubbermaid wolfsburg mat set ( I could still buy that at the dealer through the 80.s) and the rather nice sisal or coco fiber set. When I get to that stage I was just going to copy the remnants of the rubbermaid set I have and buy some decent period carpet from Sewfine and have them bound at the edges. Ray

I still have enogh carpet an mat parts left in my oterwise rotted interior that I think I can make a decnt patten for the floor mats. They generally lasted a long time but the common problem with 411/412...and probably similar to type 3...is that when they age the winow seals leak. Get water sloshing around and then floor rust. Lots of daily drivers out there including a few that I have owned....that it was less hard o the car to temporarily rip the floor carpets out and drop in rubber or coco mats until you could find a way to seal everything up. Damn - how sad to see all these Type Fours rusting away like this! Well, for my part, I am keeping three very much alive and well in my part of the world. All three are garaged and lovingly maintained. I wish I had more $$$ to do things like upholstery and carpets for my 411, but at least they still look good and run great!

Mark.....the 411 & 412 are THE original type 4 vehicles....the only ones.

The type 4 engine was developed for the 411. It came in the 411 first, then the 412, then the 914....and lastly the bus.

All but a handful of gray market cars came to the US with a 1.7L and D-jet elctronic injection. In the 1974 model they switched to a 1.8L with L-jet. The handful of gray market cars had twin carbs. I have seen one like that in my life.

Hope you don't mind if I throw this into the mix.
I found this on CL yesterday and talked to the seller.
He will take $200 for it, complete interior, no engine and bad manual trans. Body is straight and all glass is good.
I was thinking about picking it up, but I need another VW like a hole in the head.
It is just north of Santa Fe, NM.

Ha! Another Ray who is interested in Type 4s! Smile

But seriously, with a manual transmission (never officially offered for the USA) and a straight, unrusted body, this would probably be the peak of vintage VW driving. Hours on end in comfort and stability at 80+mph highway driving, with plenty of room for family and luggage.

My 411's and 412's have all been 4 speeds......but....my current and only 412 is the only one that came that way. Its a two door and was a tourist "pick up" vehicle. My gold four door, my gray 411 wagon and my alaska blue. 412 wagon (all RIP but live on in many pieces...many on my current car)....were all converted from several 411 and 412 with four speeds I found in wrecking yards.

Yes......they are very sweet rides for cruising between 70 and 80 mph. The gold 4 door used to do regular straight trips between Oklahoma city and Atlanta...rounnd trips....with no issues at high speed. Ray

Is there any more info on this junkyard? Would like to give the owner a call and find out what else is there and what prices are. I have a 71 411 sedan. Wouldn't mind stocking up on parts. Would like to check it this weekend if I can.
