Do any of those panels wind up significantly thinner? Just curious with all the shaving that I assume takes place.

Very cool, Danny!
Those Cleco Fasteners are going through the same holes used to, ultimately, fasten the cover in place, right?
And the Cleco Fasteners hold the ring tight enough to hammer out that flange?

Hi Mark and yes ! But I would use C clamps or c Clamp vise grip too ! Never hurts to have a few extra clamps

Hi Danny, beautiful work! I have a 68 Ghia that needs a nose job. My metal fab skills are intermediate, i can TIG weld fairly well. My problem is getting the patch panel to fit without gap. How do you hold it in place? I have used those slotted wing nuts but the gap is too big and after tacking in place it is hard to get that holder out due to shrinkage. The ridge on the Ghia nose is it curved or does it have a slight flat spot on the peak? My hood has that shape, a slight flat on the peak.

Thanks, Vic

Vise grip make's long tong style vise grips that I use to hold stuff as I tack weld. And the nose peak shape changes shape from hood edge to bottom by horn hole cut out. Hope that helps. You do not want any gap when tig welding and the smaller the rod dia the better ! I use .023 dia. You can use mig welder wire too !

I guess I need to get some very LONG Vise Grip tongs! I have a few shorter ones. Thanks for the tips. I have used MIG wire for TIG welding. I am going to try a little harder. Good to know about the change in shape of the ridge.

I have a couple pair of vise grips I cut and made long enough to do pan halves. If your tig machine has a digital read out and can see the amps , I use about 1 amp per a thousands of material thickness. so if welding 20 gauge , about .037 to .039 thousands thick use about 35-40 amps on machine. And when I am finished tacking , there about 3/16 apart and alot are just fused together. Hope that helps

Finished remachine'n a detail into the tooling of the early ghia battery tray. Where center latch panel laps on to battery trays. Primer'd NOS latch panel is a later ghia part , And doe's not have the detail to lay into corner of enboss'd area on battery tray.

(last two steps)?

i have been having a heck of a time getting my welds ground down as smooth as this. it's so tempting to take a 40 grit flap disc on a variable grinder, but it warps so quickly.

do you have a sanding disc on an air tool or drill?

i see your file - that looks like the last step, no?

Thanks! Smile
