Wow.. that is looking really, really good.
One thing I've never understood clearly. The Germans never painted the magnesium transmission cases yet the transmission builders do? I get that it prevents corrosion yet my 69 vert is running it's original, un-touched transmission in raw form w/out any corrosion on it.. Just talking out loud. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

In fact they did paint some of them. The cars that were destined for colder climates where they were more prone to corrosion from road salt they were painted by the factory. I've seen many og transaxles with traces of factory black paint.
In case anyone disputes that (I know there is a lot of controversy on the subject).. ,here's my OG 52k miles trans that I removed, this car still had the og BOGE shocks, everything was original, obviously never rebuilt. Car was purchased new from a dealer in Minnesota where they salt the roads. I wiped off some dirt and voila! original factory black paint. nuf said.

Nice Dave looks great.
What is the round port on the front of the carb at the choke? I don't think I've ever seen one like that. |

my carb is a 28 PICT. It's the choke pull off vacuum chamber. same function as the triangle diaphragm on a 28PICT1 but an earlier carb. _________________ '63 Karmann Cabriolet L456 Rubin (Ruby Red)

Thanks! I'm also a follower of your Turkis build. Can't wait to hear what you do with the Judson you just scored also. _________________ '63 Karmann Cabriolet L456 Rubin (Ruby Red)

This past weekend I got the engine mounted to the trans and got it prepared to fire up for the first time and do the break in procedure. First I removed the rocker arms and spark plugs, I hooked up a makeshift oil pressure light using a dome light. got all the temporary wiring hooked up. I added Brad Penn break in oil. cranked it over for about ten seconds and oil pressure light went out! Awesome, so far so good..
After that I took a short break so not to rush and forget something. So I installed the rocker arms and adjusted valves, gapped the plugs. for some reason I didnt have new spark plugs installed. I guess I just threw in an old set to keep dirt out. I figured they would still work good enough till I could get new ones. Poured a teaspoon of gas down the carb and cranked it and it fired up for a couple seconds..Cool!
next step... hook up a gas can and fire it up.. at 2000 RPM for 20 minutes. sound nerve racking but it has to happen so I went for it. couple seconds in had gas pouring out the vent tube.. shut it down, changed the float needle and seat, round two.. fired up went to 2000 rpm, fuel hose pops off shoots gas all over my nice new clean engine. Damn old hose been on there for a couple years drying out so I got a couple hose clamps to hold it for now. round three, couple seconds in.. gas pouring out the vent tube again... too much fuel pressure in the rebuilt pump, got another pump flange gasket and doubled them up to lower pressure.. seemed to work. OK, round 4 finally got up to 2000 rpm waiting ...waiting... ok looks good,.. start my phone timer for 20 minute count down..so far so good. grabbed my phone to take video of it running and a couple seconds later..phone dies..crap! that's my timer. While engine is screaming on, I had to find a charging cord to plug in my phone. got phone on charger.. engine still screaming away. but I had no idea for how long so I guessed about 5 minutes so far and no issues.
checked phone after what I thought was about ten minutes and it said "timer done". that was the longest and fastest twenty minutes ever. weird!. kicked engine down to idle and was running a little rough. tried to adjust carb. didn't help, pulled off number two spark plug and didn't change idle at all. so i figured Id shut her down for the day and get back to it the next day to check valves and timing and get new spark plugs.
So yesterday I rechecked point gap, timing, valves, new plugs, new fuel hose, carb mixture screw, everything set to fire up.. cranked it and it ran perfectly smooth and quiet, let it idle till warm and fine tuned carb.
What a good feeling and a huge milestone. here's a picture of it a few minutes before firing it up

I'm jealous...but in a good way. Love the pictures and story. Unless I missed it somewhere, how did you handle the bumpers? I can't imagine they're original unless you had them rechromed. What's the secret? |

Thanks bigdog, and yes, the bumpers are og.. but I've been piecing them together for 12 years. Every time I find another component better than what I have, I trade up. They look really good from 10 feet but there are minor imperfections here and there. I still need to take them apart to paint the brackets and back sides and I'll give them a good polish on my buffer wheel before the final install. I'm not ruling out getting them re-chromed if they bother me enough after the car is complete but I'd rather have og with some flaws than cheap repops. WW's are nice but big $$. I'd rather re-chrome ogs for the money. _________________ '63 Karmann Cabriolet L456 Rubin (Ruby Red)

Knowing how long you have been collecting parts, how long you have been working on the car and your attention to detail ...I wouldn't have expected anything other than a stellar job but i think you have surpassed stellar!
I can't wait to come by and see it in person!
Great job, Dave! _________________ Jerry...
