You nailed it! This was a very complete original low mileage (52k) car when I got it. Problem is it grew up in the Midwest rust belt. My idea was to preserve it's originality as much as possible other than restoring the rusted out rear wheel wells and rails. My goal is to finish it so in another 50+ years if someone takes it apart again to restore it, they won't be able to tell it was "restored" once already. _________________ '63 Karmann Cabriolet L456 Rubin (Ruby Red)

Been following this thread....absolutely outstanding work. I have a 1963 Vert I bought for $800 from the original owner in 1993...Ruby red car like yours. Your thread is inspiring me to pull it out of the shop and start the resto.
Keep the updates coming! |

Cool thanks. It's easier to stay up on the thread when I know there are other people paying attention to it. Thanks to everyone for the positive comments. _________________ '63 Karmann Cabriolet L456 Rubin (Ruby Red)

I sand blasted a bunch of misc. parts to paint black. I used Eastwood's 1:1 epoxy primer and Sherwin Williams single stage urethane that I had matched to the black color from the back of the shift rod access cover. Probably not really noticeable on its own but next to true black it has a grayish tint.

Are you going to paint the brackets silver again?
Bumpers look nice are they from WW? |

Yep going with the correct silver color brackets. Bumpers are og but not from this car. I've been piecing them together for a while replacing parts as I find better ones. _________________ '63 Karmann Cabriolet L456 Rubin (Ruby Red)

If I didn't see it on you tube I would have never believed it was possible to stretch the small end over the inner bell. It was not easy but worth the effort.

Some under hood detail. Note...shift rod access cover was originally painted Ruby along with the screw holding it. Strange how that was done at the Karmann factory. It's cool to see the differences in the coachbuilt cars from the VW factory.

Slow and steady. It's getting cold though, hard to work out in 18 degrees. _________________ '63 Karmann Cabriolet L456 Rubin (Ruby Red)
