|
|
I just got my DPR crank and I went to install the big woodruff key but it won't fit snug. I have 3 keys all of them slightly different sizes. I didn't polish or sand any of them. One of them I can press in by hand and I can move it easily front to back in its slot. The other 2 when I try to hammer them they get to a certain point and then when I hammer the front stands up and on the next stroke the back will stand up etc. Maybe the slot in my crank is a little big but what do I do?
Keep buying woodruff keys until one fits
Get one in as snug as possible and just fit the gear over it
I assume (hope??) that a slightly loose key isn't gonna ruin anything but I've never had to deal with this before. What should I do? |

Yeah I got it from DPR. I just figured that the problem was the key not the crank because everything looks fine. |

De-burr the key? If I do it'll be even looser than it already is. |

well the loose one is obviously loose.. the other 2 wouldnt need to be hammered in, if they were loose.
any of those keys original VW? _________________ Co-owner, 2 Brothers Guns

No, all 3 are after-market. The ones I can hammer in are slightly too "short" for the keyway and I think that's what's causing the play from end to end. What a pain! |

I got me a genuine VW woodruff key.
Now I can push the key into the keyway most of the way by hand and then tap it a few times with an 8 oz hammer to seat it.
Is that good or do I still need a snugger fit |

I have about 2000 big keys, 2500 little keys, 4000 steel crank gears, 1000 oil slingers, probably 3000 crank gear spacers and 2500 snap rings. The only thing I don't have is many brass gears because sometime in the last 15 years, they were stolen for scrap value. In the last 41 years, we've probably disassembled and scraped about 15,000 engines. _________________ Please "LIKE" us on facebook to see what we are working on.

Stolen by employees? Must be the low wages
Kidding.
Does the fitment of my key sound good? It presses in with fingers most of the way, I finished it off with a 7 oz hammer, and there's no looseness or play. |

You're actually not far off.....on the "former" employee part
As for the key, yes you will have no problem. The gear itself is a press fit so as long as they key isn't falling out, you are good. _________________ Please "LIKE" us on facebook to see what we are working on.

my key was tight all the way through, but as long as it is snug you are fine, just like roy said, are you using a stock spacer or using a racer spacer? I used a racer spacer it surrounds the key way area better |

The key is snug for sure. It didn't just drop in by hand I had to press it in with my fingers before I had to break out the hammer for the rest of it.
I got this kind of spacer

That's the racer spacer. Sounds to me like you're good to go. |
