I am puzzled to what this part may be. It has a VW stamp and numbers. I don't know if it part of a latch (door, hood, or bumper). Help greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hello Mr Odd Ball . It's a Retractable seat belt mounting for 1970 Karmann Ghia. Picture found in Gallery. If you go to classifieds- search- parts for ghia - seat belts you'll see some for sell.

Yes, it is for a seat belt system. But it is actually a 1967 part, primarily used on Beetles. Not too sure if it was standard equipment on later years

That's the securing bar for Lobster Claw seat belts found in Beetle, Ghia, and Type 3 vehicles from the late-60s up to 1971.

I'd say they were used up until 72. My 72 super has them.

I'm sure they weren't used in bugs ever. They were used in Ghia's starting August 69 for the 70 model. They had a short life, when they went to a more normal seat belt starting August 72 for the 73 model. If you look through the owners manuals you can see the changes.

They were definitely used in 1967 Beetles.

Other than that I do not know.

Beetle/Type 3 center mounts are longer than Ghia, as seen above.

I had an early 68' with lobster claw seat belts. The mount looked exactly like the one pictured on the far left in this picture. I don't remember if it had any part #'s on that one or not...

I know they're a little difficult to get out of after a bit of socializing at the local club. A buddy and I sat in the dark for what must have been 15 minutes one night trying to get out of his GF's '67........ Confused

From the August, 1967 Karmann Ghia owner's manual.

The 1968 Owner's manual shows a different style, yet the late-1968 Ghia I parted had lobster claws.

I have had two daily - driver 1970 Ghias and I currently own a 1971. (Summer car ) ALL of them came with those stone-age seat belts. I must say that I CANNOT STAND those OG seat belts AT ALL - they do not seem safe - I have had them just drop off of that loop while cruising at a reasonable speed on the freeway.( Perhaps it would have helped had I simply lubed them) but instead I ultimately just changed them out with modern VW belts – the conventional belts mounted right up with out any modifications and were RETRACTABLE! (That in itself was a major improvement.) And that satisfying "click" you would hear when engaging them before taking off – was a very reassuring sound. As a modern seat belt - they work using clutches ,pawls and weights just as the seat belts do today, performing just as the modern belts that they are. In my opinion, unless your are hauling a "trailer queen" to shows, MODERN seat belts are ONE of a very few things that should be over looked at cars shows - even by a semi-purists like myself.

I thought this too from the pictures
But in person these lobster claws are huge and cumbersome. I have the stock 67 Bug style your talking about. It's not those. These don't have any VW stamp or part #. Just the name Bero
I'm baffled. They came in a box with other Vw parts so I'm hoping to get this figured out.
Thx
