Just had to pitch in here Juan, to congratulate you and your friends on your wonderful and creative project. You have done what most all of us here have dreamed about doing, but didn't, or couldn't. You should be very proud!

Thank you so much Roy and Craig!
I changed the wheels, the BRMs are back on my 54 beetle. Now the car has regular VW wheels painted black. I think they suit the car better and it looks racier. here is a pic:

Awesome job! I have some questions for you. How is the body attached to the frame? Is the body all one piece? If you ever have the body off can you take some pictures of the chassis showing the body mounts? Did you enjoy learning to weld on aluminum while doing this?
Sorry for so many questions but I wish I could just sit down with you & talk all night about this. Things like this really excite me.
I can't seem to access the tumblr pages of the build. _________________ Mic

Thank you Mic.
Yes, the body is one piece. Very inconvenient as I have recently found out everytime we need to adjust something!. Anyway I consider this car a first attempt, so the next one (if I ever do another one) will have the full hinged rear like the 550.
the body sits on the chassis along the sides of the seats, plus it has two bolts on the front, that attach to tubes welded to the front suspension, two on the rear, and six on the sides on the bottom. I think the picture will be easier to understand, so I will post some soon.
This is a trial and error method, and I while I ran the car at 120 KMH today, I dont know how it will work going faster (I think it could reach at least 150-160). I still need to find out if it is generating down force or if it will try to fly away like a kite.
Since I needed to have the car ready as fast as possible (this hobby has taken a lot of time of my career) I went for the fastest method of welding which was using a spool gun with a miller mig welder. It is the worst possible way of doing it. You cant really do much to the body after its welded or all the welds brake, and you have to file nasty hard welds off.
In the meantime I have learnt to weld with gas. What a difference!!! Welding with gas I could say that is almost a therapy, a beautiful ART.
Next one will be gas welded for sure. _________________ Juan Badel

Juan,
Sorry again for all the questions but I'm enthused & like to know how people do things. If it's explained in the tumblr link I'm sorry as I can't access it.
What thickness & grade of aluminum did you use for the body? Can't believe you used a spool gun but what grade of wire & diameter did you use? Being a welder by trade I only use a spool gun on 1/4" thick or thicker material. Using it on thinner is tricky so I can see why you had some problems. Did you use backers while welding to stop the burn through? Any problems with the welds cracking after sanding the welds smooth? (missed the part about the welds breaking)
Which model Miller do you have & which spool gun? _________________ Mic

Not a problem Mic. I just noticed that on my signature is the old adress for the blog, the new one is
bd480spyder.tumblr.com
I used a miller 180 with a spoolgun 100. The wire is .9 mm.
The aluminum is .050 3003.
Yes, the welds cracked all over when sanding and planishing the body. We had to redo many sections. Also weld some parts on the insde as well as the outside. As I said the only reason why we did it that way was because we couldnt handle the gas welding at that time, and I didnt have a tig welder available. I would not ever do it again like that, specially because Ive been practicing the gas welding and now im doing it quite acceptable.
We didnt use backers, just found a way of angling the gun and doing small sections at a time to avoid the burn thtough.
Dont worry about the questions! _________________ Juan Badel

Hello everyone I thought that I would share this is pic I took today of the car. Ive made several changes. I cut the body so the engine could be accesed. Also, repainted it using a polyurethane clear coat. The brm style wheels are back, and finally have a windscreen on.
I hope you all have a good weekend. _________________ Juan Badel

It's a real beauty! Thanks for sharing.
Have you had any issues besides the engine access? It is a sweet car, you should be very proud of your accomplishment. _________________ Mic

Thank you so much. The only thing that I need to fine tune now is the engine. Basically i think my engine is too powerful for the car. also its tuned for high rpms so its a pain to drive in Bogotas crazy trafic, altough once its at speed its great. Heres a photo shot today.
Have a good weekend!

What is the reaction from that Bogota traffic when you come through in your nifty little sports car? |

It certainly attracts a lot of attention. most people come with a nice word, and is always a topic of conversation. I just try to stay out of the way of the big buses which could drive over me and not even notice it! _________________ Juan Badel

Hello everyone, I just thought I would share with you that I have started work on car 002. On this one I want to apply everything I learnt while doing the first one, and also use the new tools. We made an english wheel and also got hold of some gas welding equipment. So this car should come up really nice. We are currently doing some modifications to the wooden buck.
You can follow the whole process at my blog, which has a new address:

I'm excited to see what you do. I loved the first one. I watched your short video "barn find", it was really cool! What kind of chassis will you be using for 002? _________________ Mic

Happy new year to everyone, best wishes for 2014.
Thank you Patty for your comment about my filmaking abilities! I do suck as an actor though..
Mic, I am planning on doing a round tube chassis similar to the Porsche RSK. I love the way that it looks, similar to rag and tube airplane.
I am slowly working on the buck, but its starting to take shape. I have just posted a new photo to the blog in case you want to check it out.
