|
I'm new to this forum, but happy I found it! I live in Denmark and I'm considering buying this gem, but before I take the leap, thought I would post some photos and see if any of you could offer up some advice on the following:
1. Heater channels are rusted completely, but the upper piece (rocker, trim etc.) is perfect (as are the door columns). Is there any way to remove the old heater channels without damaging the good bits?
2. Can the heater channels be removed and replaced without lifting the body from the pan? Anybody have a link with pics or video showng how its done?
I have had 2 Type 1's both California cars, so never had rust to deal with..this Fasty is kinda scary. It is in generally great shape and appears to be completely original, the interior is pristine. Motor needs a rebuid but runs. 129,000 original km's one owner car. I've posted photos in the Type 3 gallery.

If the car was in the states, we'd just contact Mike Fisher or Joel (BOO_KOO_Z) for some heater channel sections. Shipping might be prohibitive for you though. Yes, they can be replaced while the body is still on the pan. I don't know IF anyone's done a video of it before though. That's a nice complete standard Fasty though. It has had a partial repaint, as evidenced by the green paint on the door seals. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I'm glad you posted a photo of the dash! I have a 1970 Notchback that I bought in Italy and the dash in it looks just like yours: no brake warning light or defrost switch. I thought that maybe someone had filled in the holes, but now I see that it might have been standard on European models. |

Funny you are in Ramstein...I was born at the airbase hospital there (airforce brat)...There are a few more pics of the dash in the gallery page. Its bare bones as this was a base model, no clock even! _________________ Cheers, David

I've been here a little over two years. I may be leaving in a few months or within the next year...
Your car has a nice uncracked dash, quite rare these days... My 70 must have been a deluxe model because I have the clock and exterior molding. Only difference in our dashes is that I have a small green light between the light switch and the hazard switch. Italy added these lights to their cars to remind you that your lights are one. Obviously they didn't realize that the Type3 already had a gauge light to tell you... |

Does anyone know if it is possible to use Ghia heater channels on a Fastback? _________________ Cheers, David

Nope. Not possible, unless you're just using them for parts. I think there's a guy named Mario in Germany that's offering T-3 parts. It might be worth checking into. He also sells on German e-bay. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

That looks like a really nice fasty! I wouldn't let the heater channel rot put you off, just get them repaired up by someone who knows how to properly weld, dump the heat exchangers and fit an eberspacher
The difference between a standard and deluxe Type 3 aren't that great, VW never went mad with extras! I reckon a tacho would fit nice in the blank gauge hole. I have a Volvo one in mine
@Woreign My UK '72 doesn't have a brake warning lamp either, maybe only North American cars had them fitted? _________________ www.dubberware.com - Personalise Your Ride! |

Thanks for the positive words! I found the heater channels from Mario and another guy called Type 3 Konny in Germany, and even found a guy here in Denmark that has a set, so panic over. I actually take delivery of the car next week (these photos are from the day I saw it the first time), so once it's here I will take more photos and pick your wise brains further! I havent worked on VW in over 20 years so allot to re-learn. Thanks again for the great tips so far this site is awesome!
@phatman I would love to find a tach for that ugly blank spot to balance out the guage set...any tips on where to find? Which Volvo did yours come out of? _________________ Cheers, David
