Making good, but slow progress on all the prep for paint and re-assembly which mostly involves tedious cleanup of parts and removal of Silver overspray from standing exposed in the body shop, sanding epoxy primer areas that were painted with god knows what type of green paint in a feeble attempt to match L60D for reasons unknown to me Rolling Eyes

I'm going to Ohio end of April, with a trip to St. Louis as well and want to order/pick up parts to bring back with me.

A few questions I hope you all can help with:

Any suggestions on VW shops/supplier to visit in Cleveland and Columbus areas? Also around St. Louis? Our routes will be I-70 and I-64 via Louisville in between Columbus and STL.

Are these parts correct? Any issues from those who have used them?

Is the clutch disk here Ok to use with my OE stock pp and flywheel?:

Considering this kit for my OE ATE calipers if correct.

Yeah I lived in Cleveland Hts and Chesterland when I was a kid from mid 60's until we moved to California in '75. My family is spread around the state, Kent, Aurora, Chagrin falls and Delaware. So get to visit the whole rust belt!

Cool. I attended KSU for graduate studies and actually got arrested there during the 1977 "tent protests" protesting plans to build a gym on the site of the may 4 1970 killings.

NE Ohio was "Squareback Country" in the '60s and '70s. There were all sorts of VW specialty shops in the area back then. Almost all are gone, at least further south towards Akron. The last survivor that was still in business last I heard was Elmar in Streetsboro- Streetsboro Foreign Car Service, if memory serves.

EDIT: Had to go look... and yes, looks like he's still there. He opened up the same year I started my apprenticeship. Damn. Doesn't seem like over 40 years!

https://www.angieslist.com/companylist/us/oh/stree...365062.htm

Couldn't remember his last name... wanted to say "Krupa" but I am thinking of the drummer. Kruza it is. He's a very good egg!

If anyone will know where the remaining Type 3 treasures are stashed in the area, Elmar might be the one.

I'd tell you to say hi but doubt he'd even remember me- it's likely been 30 years. Smile

Couldn't say about the clutch disc but I didn't like the MOOG tie rod ends - I wound up tossing mine in the garbage because the rubber boots didn't stay in place and the zerk fitting was a bitch and a half to install.

They're cheap and you get what you pay for with these...that's my .02

If you're set on RockAuto.com, go with the ACDelco branded tie rod ends, they worked pretty well for a friend's Type 3.

You can get OCAP (Italian) tie rod ends from www.bughaus.com for about $15 each. I buy a decent amount from them and, so far, all of the parts are nice.

The inner left you can get from Lucas:

A Samba member reported on a thread 2 or 3 days ago that he got a left inner from Rock Auto, and it was an OCAP in an AC Delco box:

Yes, that clutch disc will work for your application. I prefer Sachs clutch assemblies, but lately they've been making the throw out bearing pretty cheap (has plastic in it), which is something I'm not a fan of in that location.

Soon. I am preparing a bunch of photos of progress...met with a painter yesterday Laughing

I have run into a problem I hope you guys can help with. I purchased a new set of Mahle 85.5's, and it seems the cylinders will not sit flush with the case register...case was decked 0.40mm. The OE VW cylinders sit perfectly.

What are my options here since I want to use the new set of P&C's??

OE fit:

Mahle Fit: Note I tried fitting with and without studs in place, so the cylinders are not hitting studs. There is a .016in gap between the base of the cylinder and case. Do I need to get the cylinders machined? Should the case register have a chamfer edge?

Those will fit David. I'm not sure I'd believe the T-34 spec on them, but they're priced about the same as here in the US for regular T-3s. I'd probably strip off the outer layer of insulation, and finish sandblasting them, then paint them. Keep in mind that shipping might cost almost what he's asking due to their weight.
I hope this helps.

Thanks Bob. He gave me a good deal on shipping so I bought them. What do you make of the cylinder issue I posted about earlier? The 3/4 side of the case seems ok so I'm stumped.

I don't know. I'd probably do a full mock up, and see if the volumes are the same (might need shimming to get the deck heights even). If so, you could do a light turn on the jugs that match up with your spacer shims. Clatter could do an excellent tutoral on it, as he showed that exact operation when he was building that "sweep the floor" bus engine last fall. Keep in mind that most engine builders don't really use just the paper gasket any more, but rather use high temp silicone (sparingly) to seal the case to barrels. It just works that much better at preventing oil leaks. I like ultra copper myself for doing that job. Smile
Wait and see what others here recommend before getting to far along with doing any machining. It might save you a few bucks.
