Awesome. What setup are you going to run with (upper, lower)? I think if I choose to build another I will select an M4 upper instead of a 20". They are lighter, and the feed ramps are machined further down to help direct rounds into the chamber. 75 cents a round in bulk is crazy! _________________ - Marc M.

I went with an M4 upper. cheapest i can find. my goal is to just get a rifle together and upgrade it as i learn more about it. I know Walmart sells 223 for about 39 bucks for 100 rd boxes of Federal if you can find it in stock. its the internet gougers thats getting 75 cents in bulk. im gonna lurk my local walmart today and find out the scoop on getting there first thing in the AM on stocking day. |

That sounds like a good idea. My buddy got tired of going through that so he started "rolling his own". Whatever you do, try to stay away from WOLF brand ammunition. After close to 1,000 rounds the inside of the reciever will be a total mess compared to brass ammunition. The steel case doesn't expand as easily which causes a bunch of gas to blow past it, onto the bolt face, and into the reciever. _________________ - Marc M.

Just finished this this morning. Palmetto "dissipator" resembling upper, New Frontier lower (polymer, never again.) got the lower for $80 figured what the hell... Cheapest aluminum lower I found aluminum was almost $300 at the time, $100 transfer in my area so do the math. Anyway I watched the torture test on this lower and was surprised. I didn't like how there WHOLE lower parts kit was polymer including the hammer, and was reading about how you "just have to massage some holes if you put in a metal/aluminum parts kit but holy crap, every hole was a size too small, the bolt catch was too narrow for the lever, and the pistol grip hole was not matching any pistol grips. Massaged my pistol grip hole and it works now. But yeah, I figure you get what you pay for..... dressed it up with some magpul MOE furniture with an STR butt stock. All in all, I had fun building it, and love the look of it. Going to take it to the range in the next week or two, stoked.

$100 transfer in my area... |
If you were closer I'd hook a brother up. I charge 35 for transfer unless it's an NRA member, Calguns member, or Samba member then it's 25. Still have to pay 25 DROS plus sales tax if it's out of state, but would have still saved you some coin!
As for the lower being polymer, don't sweat it. I've had atleast a hundred lowers come into my shop in the last 6 months, some look nicer than others but they all shoot the same.
My walk in closet full of toys...and every one of them needs a new home
Not big on modern sporting rifles, but more so an SKS guy. This is my latest build...and yeah, she's 100% 922r compliant and cali legal

No reason to be jealous...that's how we roll around here! California may put laws on how many rounds we can have in our guns, but they'll never put a law on how many guns we can have in our line up! Although I must admit I am dreading the day we get pulled over on our way to the range! Cop gonna look in the back seat like wha...?
This is how we roll!

You really can save money rolling your own, and learn a lot about your rifle. There is an 11% excise tax on completed guns, when you buy and build you can take that off the top. The bad part is that if you don't take the time to get educated, there are some very poor quality parts out there.
In my experience, all of the plastic lowers are crap, with the exception of the Cav Arms (now GWAC) lowers that have a fixed stock molded on. Do some googling before you buy one, as there are many pictures of them in pieces for your viewing pleasure. Now that things have calmed down, forged lowers can be had well under $100, and there aren't too many good reasons to buy one.
It's a good time to build. Many places have parts in stock, too. Ammo is still hit or miss most places.

For those that are intimidated about building their own AR, don't be. If you can adjust your valves, you can build an AR. The hardest part that I remember was installing the roll pins for the bolt catch, and trigger well. I was just being careful and didn't want to scratch the crap out of the reciever. Buy the upper reciever complete, and everything will go together like cake. |
Start with a Billet lower & you'll have no need for roll pins Here's my MagPul with integrated trigger guard. The bolt catch uses a micro set screw

Perfect...as long as we're on the same page
My first firearm was a Ruger P85 that my dad traded a knife for out of the sheriff's academy in 1989. When I was 12 I blew my thumbnail off with it, trying to shoot like my dad because he was left handed. When I became of age he sold it to me for cheap. Working at a jewelry store and hating the parkerized finish, I polished it to a mirror finish. It looked gorgeous, as long as you didn't touch it, otherwise the fingerprints would rust in a matter of hours it seemed. I sold that gun to a buddy about 6 months ago. Man I miss that stupid boat anchor lol _________________ 69 bug 1600sp buckpack ceramic header w mondo muffler, riviera wheels, 185/65 front 205/70 rear, dual baby webers, big stereo in the works.
