I found a couple splits today sitting around. Dude wants to trade his 58 panel for my 71 bay. I am not going to do it because my bay is to good and I love it to much. I might trade a different bay but not this one. I want a split bad but the trade makes no sense right now.

I would trade my 73 Westfalia for a 1965 Split Window Walk Thru in decent shape. I regret ever selling my Split Window and there is not a day goes by that I don't look at the picture of my baby Blue walk thru and me sitting in front. Oh I miss my split window.

Depends on how much you love your bay, vs wanting the split. Id trade a couple of my bays for a velvet green all stock split camper. How bad is the panel?

I will get pics soon of the bus, he has a 66 delux one also, but I don't see them as being very fun. My 71 is a head turner and has a fast engine, the split looks slow and needs paint, and I prefer window buses.

Maybe trade if you could keep your motor. Depends on rust but the split might have more value.

I spent 2 years in research before deciding to buy a bay. If a split were handed to me, I expect I would sell it to pay for bettering my Bay.

Sorry. The simplicity of the split comes with a lot of baggage in terms of safety and sturdiness.

no - have driven both on long trips and I prefer a bay. I also did some test drives when Vanagons were new and I'll still prefer a bay.

If I hadn't put so much time and energy into my bus or had just bought it, probably. But like many on here, at this point you'd now have to pry it from my cold dead hands.

I would trade my bay for a split any day of the week. Would you trade a 72 camaro for a 67 camaro? I would love to go on the Shasta Snow Trip

Hell no! I love driving a car the splitty community hates. The splitty scene is getting to egotistical anyways and taking the fun out of them. I'll hang with the "rejects" any day of the week Cool

the cool factor just isn't there for me.
split snob h8 aside, I really just love to drive and the splits don't offer what bays and vans do.

I hope you posted this in the split forum too Twisted Evil

UHG. After reading your comment I thought to myself I thought I was overdue to catch up on the splitty forum.
Of the 5 threads I read:
- One made reference to replacing rusty metal as a "hack"
- Another encouraged people to buy Brazilian busses to save the American splits for those "with deeper pockets".

Stick with your bay! Worst you'll get is criticism for painting over OG paint Laughing

I have had a bunch of split window buses over the years, but I prefer the baywindows for what I do (long distance cruising and camping). They just handle better and I prefer the type 4 engine for it robustness.

Plus I like rolling down the windows and having a glove compartment.

If you really add up the hours that you've spent under your Bus improving and fixing things, you might be surprised how much you've put into the vehicle you drive.

I'm not willing to start over. I drive a crusty '71 and wish I still had my rust-free '66 Roadrunner Camper walkthough from my college days, but I don't want to start over. I'm not giving up the 100's of hours of sweat-equity that I've invested in my crusty '71.

My first car:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The reasons why I sold it in 1973:
Very noisy
Top speed 65 mph
Very slow in the mountains
Poor handling, easy to roll
Can't put arm out front windows, as mentioned
Had two accidents,(photo is second paint job) no front supports
Had to open both side doors to get inside (no slider)
No heat in rear
As mentioned, no glove box
Wipers always in the way
You tend to drive hunched over
Gear shift was farther over for third & fourth till I got a shift extension
Clutch was harder to push in
Poor visibility

Things I did like:
Overhead ventilation with switch to cool back of bus
Put in reserve fuel tank valve
When you stopped quick in the rain the water would go off the roof over the front window like a waterfall

Yeah, that!

I've got a split bus available to me; it makes me want to do something very wrong to it and post it on the split websites just to annoy them. Razz
