I am actually working with a long time samba member. I will be sending him a complete conversion and he will document what it takes to install. He is not an automotive professional so things should be described the way a "Weekend Mechanic" will better understand. |
Did this ever happen? I'm planning on doing this swap.... |

stay tuned for a complete write up on this one. Also notice complete new exhaust- all stainless except for the muffler that is which is easily available from any parts store for about $40.

I have had the pleasure of hearing the exhaust system.
Sweet, sweet music and the spool of the turbo is an added little bonus.
Looking forward to the write up.
Andrew, it would be cool to make up a "re-engineered by Flint" decal to slap on the vans that get this conversion
Keep up the good work |

Man that exhaust is simple and clean.. not like mine at all (and I'm using the same muffler *thumb up)
I've been making a convoluted bracket/mount to fit where the AC mounts used to be (non-AC in my van) to carry the weight of the muffler.
maybe some parts to buy ala cart would be good.
I'm hoping tohave my install done to camp in 2weeks
but I just ordered intake/intercooler bits today

Thanks Slo-
I am looking forward to bolting one into my '69 single cab eventually. I think they will be a great powerplant for the Bays.

That exhaust is very elegant in its simplicity. I can only hope to build something that will be an inferior copy. _________________ Tim Potts

I too like that exhaust design.
Andrew: did you decide to hang exhaust from frame because (in part) this might help keep the exhaust from cracking? I know FAS is doing "same".
I'll be curious to see which cat that is (mostly to know the weight of it)
Thanks for posting those pics. Useful info to be gleaned.
Looking good!

Also Andrew are you running O2 deletes? does the motor run OK/ w/o them?
I'm trying to fit in a Vanagon Cat w/O2 bung and keep it within reach of the wiring harness plug. _________________

Thanks 'Nut.
The cat is just a universal one from Summit racing. The exhaust was just easier to hang from the body. The flex section allows for movement in the motor mounts.
I am using only the front O2 sensor Dan, I have driven these engines with both O2 sensors unplugged, it was unnoticeable. |

Very nice exhaust set up.
Can you please post the specs of the muffler and clamps? I see the muffler is from NAPA. Are the clamps and flex joint from NAPA as well?
I need to fabricate a new exhaust for my I4 powered van and that muffler looks like it was made for the Vanagon.
Thanks. |

Even with a flex section and rubber isolation between the exhaust and frame, I have found that attaching to the frame makes noticeably more vibration and tends to lead to failure of the turbo/manifold mounting hardware. Of course, my experiences are with diesel engines which generate a lot more vibration to begin with. |

The flex, bends, clamps, hangers, flange, O2 sensor bung are from Summit racing.
the bends are 2 1/2 dia. stainless mandrel bent.
the muffler...

I agree, I tried to find a way to hang it from the engine. I couldn't find a way without making a complex hanger system. I decided to give it a try hanging it from the body, so far all is good.

I really like the elegant simplicity of that setup. My ALH build will look like that, except that it will have a second flex section just prior to the muffler. _________________ Casey--

I am happy with it too. The Ford muffler fits very nicely and does a really good job of keeping things quiet. Two flexes is probably a good idea being diesel. I use two 180* bends and cut them in half to make the four 90* elbows I need. Right now, we are using the blue van, (test mule) to build them on. I will probably build a jig to make them in the future.
