they guy i bought my car from said he had a 49 title but lost it. The body # says 50. Has anyone ever seen my split with these windows that might help me find some unfo?? Thx

I probably saw your VW in Bixby, but it was a long time ago.There were 3 splits there that I checked out. I did not buy any of them unfortunately.
I may have the numbers written down somewhere, but it would be hard to find them now. If I discover the numbers, I'll let you know. I think the guy who bought them had a name that started with D. Darrell?

Yes, that car was registered as a 1949. i owned it in the late 70s, when i lived in Tenafly, New Jersey.
It actually was a 1950 standard on a 1972 pan, had a nice running 1600 DP and was my daily driver. i sold it in 1980 to buy a 1956 Bubble Window BMW Isetta.

I went to see this car again yesterday. It is amazing to me that someone (the PO) let it deteriorate to such a bad state...good thing Zac rescued it and wants to restore it.
When I got it in 1977, it had just had an engine fire, when it was white...

I completely agree. This car is now in unbelievably poor condition. i bought it in 1977 for $400 and put maybe $500 into it...was a daily driver for a couple of years and then sold it in 1980 for $2K, running. The guy, I sold it to really just bought it and flipped it almost immediately.

some people just don't get it. afterall, it's "just an old car" to some.

it was a fun car...had several fun cars since...1956 BMW Isetta, 1950 11G, 1952 with crotch coolers, 1952 Zwitter (for 20 years), 1953 Porsche Pre-A coupe, 1967 Sunbeam Alpine V, 1972 Honda 600, 1955 Messerschmitt KR-175, '54 bug and others...only wish I kept my first car, a 1948 Plymouth coupe convertible and the 1950 11G. Too late now...although, I still have my favorite car ever, a 1993 Toyota MR2 and a pretty cool '54 sedan...i'm blessed!

ZEN, when you bought the '50/'72, did it come from the guy who was in the parts department at the local VW dealer (Charles Haigh) in Spring Valley NY? Curly dark blond hair, eyes set far apart; moustache; very talkative and enthusiastic guy. In the mid '70's I sometimes went to the dealer to buy small parts for my first VW ('60 sunroof Beetle), or when my mom took her water-cooled VW there for service. I remember seeing a clean, freshly painted white early split on a '72 chassis (stock 4.5" silver steelies with hubcaps) behind the building, owned by the parts guy. I also remember he told me it's easy to put an old body onto a newer pan, just "move up the rear body mounts". The things that make a lasting impression on a teenage kid!
If yours is not the one I described, it'd be quite a coincidence that there was a similar one only about 20 miles away from you. But if you only paid $400 for yours, that would be too cheap for the one above.
It's Roland from NY! Last year I met Russ from Northvale with his white '66 Beetle which he bought from George F, and Russ mentioned he knows you from back then as well. That was at Chris Vallone's shop in Congers, when he had one of his monthly open houses in the spring and summer. Chris usually has a split there in different stages of resto among his Beetles, so that you'd have a great time there.

Small world Roland M. is it...co worker with Bill H. at the car headquarters of the other German automaker? guess you know, my wife and I worked for Volvo Cars of North America back in the 70s and 80s.
Anyway Roland, this is the very same white 50/72...A guy named Joe Gizzi from Northvale, NJ bought for two grand from that VW parts guy who built the car...soon afterwards, the car had an engine fire and Joe (plagued with being a perfectionist) lost interest in the charred split and sold it to me for $400....the rest of the story is in this thread.
I do see Classicbugs want ads all the time on thesamba, but not familiar with them, since we moved from NY to Ok. in 1994...And in 2013 this very same 50/72 appears at a friend's VW shop, here in Tulsa, Ok...unbelievable to me.

Yes! Bill H sits only about 25' away from me. He has a very clean beige-camo Thing with painted 356 wheels which he sometimes drives to the office in nice weather.
OklahomaBug- Really amazing that this '50/'72 is the very same car I remember from nearly 40 years ago! What year pan is it on now; still looks like 4-bolt wheel on front?
ZEN- I also remember Joe G; he had a nice dark green '70 Beetle, stock 1600 SP except for beauty rings and a quiet pack muffler, which he drove around Rockland Cty 20 yrs ago. George F told me back then it ran really well. I last saw him working in at a local HomeDepot about 10-15 yrs ago.

You have many interesting photos in your gallery. Is this side glass on your '55 from the car originally, or did you bring it out to OK with you from your NY move? The green round decal is from the CT VW Association; looks to be easily 20-25 yrs old...

LOL Roland...yes, I retired and have been playing with several old VWs, almost every day...'62 SO-33, '54 bug, 55 bug and 60 Euro bug. I am working on all those right now...have been jumping around, with no goals...just living in the moment.
I emailed Zac, the guy who currently owns the '50 standard (in this thread) and asked him to read all the history from before me. I think he'll love that.
Not sure of the year pan the '50 will be going on...has wide 5 hubs. I do know Zac has built a narrowed beam and is building a bagged suspension on the pan...it's gunna be a sweet "hood ride"...
