Thanks! My ideas pale in comparison to the 356 you're building. Speaking of...I just checked the progress on yours. Wanna trade?
I wish I had some new progress pics to throw in here, but sadly there are none. I've been working on bits and pieces...just not as often as I'd like. _________________ '65 Tiki Bug build --> http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=552091 |

Well, it's been a while and I still don't have much progress to show. I managed to get the kick panels roughed in and mounted (mocked up at least). Put the speakers in just to make sure everything fit properly...and they did. Some more bondo...sanding...bondo...sanding...cussing...bondo...drinking...sanding... and the kicks should be ready to cover. I've been working on a few other small projects, but none are ready to show yet.
Anyway, on with the pics...

I agree about the aroma...it's the itching I could do without.
Thanks! They would have turned out a lot better if I hadn't mixed a batch of resin too hot and warped them a little. I've had to work on them way too much to make them usable again. I think I'm gonna be happy with the end result though. It looks like the tmi carpet pieces will even fit over them pretty well. _________________ '65 Tiki Bug build --> http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=552091 |

Digging your build. Was just looking at a couple products that will keep you from ever mixing a hot batch of resin again. I've done some glassing in my past but have always tried to look for other alternatives because I suck at working againsta a short clock. These resins are a game changer for me. Hoping to be doing alot more glasswork in my future. The SMD product has no offgassing after cure. Not sure about the Solarez. Check them out!

I am in no way affiliated with either of these products. In fact they are competitors of sorts. I just thought that it was a cool technologie that I wish I had known of a few years back. |

Thanks for checking out my junker and thanks for the links. You're right...the resin would have really come in handy. At first I was thinking it was a bit pricey, but if you consider how much less waste you would have, it makes sense. Unlike you, I'm hoping to do less glassing in the future...in fact, after my last build I swore that I was done forever. Well, we see how that worked out, so I guess ya never say never.
Thanks again...good stuff. _________________ '65 Tiki Bug build --> http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=552091 |

Thank you! The Columbus show is my goal. I missed it last year (for the first time in 8 years) because my daughter was the flower girl in a family wedding...and there was that whole thing about the '65 still being in boxes. So, yeah...I'm hoping to make Columbus and Cincy this year.
Are you in the area? _________________ '65 Tiki Bug build --> http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=552091 |

Hey hedgehog, nice work here bro.
Best place for front speakers in a bug, i have seen these done before on other threads over the years, one thing I wonder is how are you going to attach the panels to the car it's self? glue? screws?

Thanks fellas!
63Rag...yeah, I've found that the kick panel area is usually the best spot in any car. After all the damn work I've done, I hope it sounds good in this one.
If you look at the pic of the driver's side kick panel above, you'll see a bracket through the speaker hole. i didn't want to drill a hole in the sheet metal, but it was either that or weld a bracket on the inside. So, yeah, I took the easy way out. I was shocked at how well the single bracket held the kick in place, so for final installation, I'm gonna use a combination of strip caulk or panel adhesive and that bracket. That will insure that the kicks aren't going anywhere and seal them off at the same time. _________________ '65 Tiki Bug build --> http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=552091 |

Meh, it kinda blends in. Or you could blame my crappy cell phone pics.

Just got back from vacation...energized and ready to get stuff done! Finished up the front. Just need to blast and paint my seat frames, put on the new pads & vinyl and finish my last "secret" interior project...then I'm ready to roll.

Great ideas !!! thanks for the photos...One of my problem areas in an upcoming 64 build was headliner expense ( one of the things I was not comfortable doing myself ) .....the bamboo shades roof idea is great along with the rest of the interior metal painted...I will substitute a white vynal roll up shade that will do the same without getting a beach look and paint the interior .......thankyou for sharing _________________ 63 two fold rag

Thanks, man...that means a lot! I'm glad you saw something that you liked in my build...do it up on yours. If you have any questions about anything I've done, hit me up...I'll help out in any way that I can. |
Nice execution! Hope the compliments aren't getting old
Can you tells more about your stereo setup? Are you running 6v still? I think there are a lot of us who are looking to run a 6v system with an iPod or iPhone source! If you've figured it out you would be a hero! _________________ My 63 build thread - http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=520975&highlight= |
