I went through the shed at my dads yesterday. I do have a 6 volt starter but I couldn't find a 6 volt generator The only down side I can really see to running it as 6 volts is that I won't be able to use the little winch I was going to mount on the front. Any idea on the cost to rewire a 6 volt generator to 12 volts? I have also considered mounting a 6 volt generator to spin the fan and fab some brackets to mount a GM alternator...although I didn't really look at the engine to see if this would be possible, it's a thought anyways. _________________ Veni, vedi, vici...I came, I saw, I conquered |

With the fixed generator stand I'm stuck running the small 90mm generator so my options are limited for a 12v generator. Looks like it would be $400.-$600. for a 12v small diameter generator. I bought a 6 volt generator off the classifieds here. It should be here tommorrow and the order from SoCal should be here Wednesday. I bought my wife an Eastwood tubing notcher and that arrived the other day so I can get some additional supports fabbed up. I'm headed to North Carolina for a few days, there should be a nice little pile of stuff here when I get back!

The 6 volt generator arrived in Vermont today! Can't wait to see it when I get back. I ordered a pair of 10x900 fan belts and read that I may need to buy a different generator pulley to work on the 36HP engine...I still need to round up a 6 volt coil but I may be able to get it fired up this weekend! Driving to Ohio Sunday for classes next week, Bellefontaine and then on to Akron. I'm also scheduled to drive to Ohio in July the weekend this is going on http://www.jimscustomvw.com/18anbugejuca.html _________________ Veni, vedi, vici...I came, I saw, I conquered |

Seriously though, I did get some parts this week. New throttle cable and housing, clutch cable, cable shortening kit and clutch cable tube.

Going to have to do a search and figure out the fan spacer positioning.

While I was on the road I also ordered a pair of 10x900mm fan belts and this afternoon I stopped by NAPA and picked up a 6 Volt coil.

It's ALIVE!! My dad helped me today, we changed the trans input shaft seal and installed the new throw out bearing. Installed a 1964ish 40HP shroud and the generator/fan assembly I had bought on the classifieds here. His 6 volt tractor battery was dead so when we bolted the engine up we didn't wire the generator. We just ran 3 wires to the switch and used a 12 volt battery. It sounds pretty good! If I can figure out how to load a video off PhotoBucket I'll add it to the thread.

Didn't go back home this week end so I didn't work on the buggy. I went to Butler, Pa for the Bantam Jeep Festival. I did , however, order a set of 22mm Super Beetle front wheel cylinders to use in the rear. _________________ Veni, vedi, vici...I came, I saw, I conquered |

I bought a replacement NOS tranny nose cone here on the Samba, I had tried to heat the old one with torches to free it up and POOF...I freed it up alright...
The Super Beetle 23.8mm wheel cylinders also arrived, hoping these are going to balance out with the 22mm master cylinder I got from SoCal. Planning on running '68 17mm rear cylinders up front. My wife sent me the photo of stuff that came! Hmm....I am going to have to either get a back up light switch or a plug to plug that hole in the nose cone.

Well life has been happening, 44 weeks on the road last year. I am starting my third week in Seattle. Hoping to fly back east and go to my dads and work on the buggy next Monday, Memorial Day. It will be May 26th, 35 years to the day that I bought it! _________________ Veni, vedi, vici...I came, I saw, I conquered |

The brake cylinders are NOT swap anywhere pieces!
The spacing from the backing plate to the centerline of the cylinder is different for different applications. Some ARE interchangeable. Some are NOT! There are differences in length too. It would be good to compare these aspects before trying to just bolt them in place. _________________ Richard

When I do get home I live in the Rutland area. I read a bunch of stuff on the wheel cylinders before buying them. I will have to go back and re-research them apparently. I bought the master cylinder before reading up and it may be to big. It's the 22mm version if I remember correctly. _________________ Veni, vedi, vici...I came, I saw, I conquered |
