Lol, ditto. I once changed the driver pan with the body on too. No, looked nothing like the pic above. It was done with a jigsaw, a chisel, a hammer, 5 blood blisters, some sheet metal screws, and some liquid nails.

It was in no way a pro job, but it worked fine. If your doing a frame-off resto, then go for the gusto. If you just want the damn pan slapped in there like the majority of us, just cut, clean, drill, caulk, screw.

No that photo is obviously a crude fake.

Besides the fact that his shirt and arms are completely spotless (no grease or blood stains), there are several things missing-- in a REAL pan replacement there would be 1. at least 6 mismatched extension cords snaked around the floor 2. at least 1lb of assorted rust flakes and enough metal fragments to make a pipe bomb 3. the contents of at least three metric socket sets on the floor, and 4. every power tool the guy owns including several that make no sense whatsoever but he used in desperation anyway (belt sander, electric blender, etc.)

Still not convinced? Study the photo one more time-- do you see a single beer can? No? Case Closed it's a fake.

Exactly what is that guy pretending to weld on that brand new rust-free thing that looks like a VW pan?

Maybe he's actually just using the welder to burn so holes through it so it drains properly and lets in plenty of fresh air.

LOL @ 66ghia. Other items missing:

1. Chunks of tarboard
2. BFH
3. Journey poster on wall
4. Shrapnel from exploding angle grinder disc
5. Cold chisels in every size and shape imaginable
6. Seats stacked against wall

Damn, I knew a Journey Poster added horsepower during an engine rebuild, but had no idea it was necessary for bodywork!

What else can I think of?

Wife's hand towel now covered in oil and blood?

Butter knifes bent outa shape by being used as flathead screwdrivers?

Gas can and tub to wash hands in?

Muir book, VW Trends and internet how-tos printed out and scattered about?

Sad thing is.. that is how I keep my work area...
loss money when I gotta waste time to find stuff/ shit is dirty/ broke.. cluttered up...

I spend I would say 45-60 min a day cleaning my work area, better then spending 2 hours looking for the number 15 torx..

You could send the team from CSI Las Vegas into my garage and they wouldn't be able to find either a 13mm or 10 mm socket if their life depended on it. On the other hand I have started filling a coffee can with 14mm sockets. I swear the 10's and 13's mutate into 12's and 14's in the middle of the night-- it's like invasion of the body snatchers out there.

I also have dozens of quality wrenches, but whenever I need either a 10 or 13mm the only one I can ever find is that rusty little 3 inch piece of crap Hazet that came in the factory toolkit. That thing follows me around the shop like a dog.

Damn, I wish my garage was that CLEAN. I swear I have the dustiest garage in town. Must be from all those flakes of rust flying about when doing floor pan work (I live in the salt belt). I think I figured out my problem, no Journey poster, just half neeked women. Very Happy

This thread shamed me into doing some much-needed shop organizing. as i put things back in the rightful places they haven't seen since there were three beatles alive, I realize I have only FIVE jackstands! I've always bought them in pairs! Do jackstands practice cannibalism? And why do rolls of MIG wire spontaneously unravel when unsupervised, and snare everything within fifteen square feet of the welding cart?

That's actually Randy Bowen(yes, THAT Randy Bowen)'s shop in Colorado Springs. That place is always immaculate. It's awesome. He's welding in the seat rails, actually, not the pan. In addition to being a helluva drag racer, Randy is a helluva good guy and a great mechanic.

bljones, yes you are correct that jack stands come in pairs.if you now have 5 the answer is obvious.in one of the pair you bought there was a male and female and they have mated. now you have offspring.watch them closing and you will end up with six!! then you might want to seperate them or your gasrage will be over run with them.those things breed like rabbits and when they are in heat they eat #10 #13 sockets and jack handles! Twisted Evil Very Happy Very Happy
