Split,
"We" never were able to conclude as to the orgin of this engine. I got it from a salvage yard, had carbs and was complete. Sold the carbs, but
intended to reassemble the engine.
My conclusion is that someone rebuilt a Porsche engine using a 36hp crankcase and Porsche internals.
With the case number it seems that is what it is.
Does your engine have a 36hp camshaft, or has the case been machined for a Porsche camshaft?

While on the topic of 356 2-piece engines:
I have got a pair of PreA heads that came off a 1100 or 1300 engine... One has 8mm valve stems and the other has 10mm.
Did Porsche use both? Or has one of mine been altered? |

Most likely the Heads have been altered. I have two heads that came with 8mm guides, but I had the intake valves and guides replaced with 10mm
guides and later intake valves. The intake valve was un shrouded in the area
in the cylinder head for better flow.
It was common to replace the 8mm guides with the 10mm guides in later years. |

Porsche used 10mm stemmed valves on the heads of 2-piece case motors. They are listed in the March 1953 parts supplement, but its not clear when they started delivering cars with them as standard. It could have been sometime in late '53 or '54. Part numbers were:
546.05.203 Intake 10mm stem
546.05.204 Exhaust 10mm stem
Can you tell if those are original-type 10mm guides in the heads? Are the intake ports on the heads round or oval?
Its also been reported that Porsche used 8mm intake and 10mm exhaust valves in the same heads for a period. My pet theory is that these heads were the Supers in 1953 and '54 that had the sodium-cooled exhaust valves, though I don't have any proof of this - just a hunch. |

This is another shaded area in the Porsche history. Looks as if the replacement heads all came with 10mm guides within the 1500S production range
of Sep.52 to Nov.54 and some of the 1300cc also came with 10mm guides.
Was the exhaust valve 616.105.405.50 the sodium filled valve? The later parts list it as replacing the 546.05204? |

Thanks for the input!
Could somebody suggest a good source for where to buy 10mm guides AND valves?
Thanks! |

I suspect that item 616.105.405.50 is a later designation. I don't know if it is the same valve, nor whether it is sodium-filled. They didn't start using the 616.xx.xxx.xx numbers until late 1955. It could refer to the same valve though. |
