I finally get to start a build thread! This story started on this thread. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=431953

It has a few issues to work on to get running, but is not as bad as some. Motor turns free, but will do leak down check this week. Master cylinder is stuck. Shifter flops around everywhere. Will be placing some orders this week to get me started. Just gonna get it running and drive it while addressing rust repairs.

The wife and kids got busy cleaning the bed up today.

Found some holes that were filled with nails and bondo in the bed in four places front to back in nice rows. Must of had something mounted over the bed at one time.

Lower doglegs are toast on both sides. (as are most)

The headliner area looks good.

The pedal pan is very nice.

Thanks for the info. I've looked through the "Archives" before, but didn't make note there are different types of slats. I thought they were all mounted on top of the ribs, not in the valleys.

Excellent.
My Turkis '62 SC was also painted over with some cheapie paint (even the interior) and I was able to strip the whole thing and buff it up. (pics in my gallery if you're interested.) It's one of my favorite VW colors.

OK, I have a motor question. My case has 0695613 stamped on it. The tech section shows 6642050 as the number that started in march '62. I couldn't find any case numbers starting with 0. I did find the section that shows one with the letter "O" stating '63 1500 no cam bearings. Anyone have any ideas?

Maybe you didn't go down far enough on the VIN page?

If you go down the VIN/Engine # page you will see that is a 1500cc engine from 9/1964.

I saw that, but wasn't sure because there were two sets of numbers listed. So the "O" stands for 1500cc option engine number for those years. Got it... thanks Everett!

Finally got this crazy hitch off the SC. Had five different size nuts and bolts holing it on there. Really stout hitch though. Don't know what to do with it. I'm not gonna use it.

No pix, but got motor pulled. Did a leak down check on it and all cylinders but #2 had only 20%! There is something very wrong with #2 though, had 90% leakage no matter what I did to change it. End play is .005, so thrust should be OK. Looks like a tear down in its future. Maybe dropped exhaust or broken ring.

I think I found out why it was parked in '88. Shift rod coupler gone and throw out bearing missing clips. Also, both axle boots split wide open. Which answers my question as to how there's more 90 weight on the outside than the inside! Try and get time to pull the trans tomorrow.

This weekend my wife and I started cleaning up some areas on the SC. We started noticing baby praying mantis sitting on the roof of the truck earlier in the week, but didn't really look any further into it. Well, after pulling the front wheels I found where they were coming from!

Also, My brave wife wanted to clean the battery tray.

That hitch might be a real VW one, have you checked it for markings? Should be worth at least a couple hundred bucks?

The hitch is built really good. I have not seen any markings on it, but didn't look real hard yet. I hope it will be a good trade for some parts I need a friend has.

The mantis are very cool. We got most of them outside after two hours work. Our bushes and monkey grass are covered in them now. They were imported from SC to TN. Very Happy

I didn't find any markings on the hitch, but did find one just like it here on the classifieds. So, it was not a "home brew" deal.

Oh yeah... haven't seen any more babies.

Motor specs are looking good! Parts are starting to come in! Very Happy

I haven't updated this thread in a while so, will post a few pix from a few weeks ago. Case and heads will be sent out this week for inspection and rebuild. Trans will be dropped off at builder soon.

Trans is out and drain plug full of metal shavings. This is no surprise due to both boots being split wide open, and very little lube to drain. My wife is ALL OVER THIS build. So, I told her what to do, and helped with some muscle when needed.

Nasty trans!

Got part of my "Funky Green" order yesterday! Gerson sent a complete right side cargo floor panel by mistake. I only needed a repair section. I'm not complaining this will save me some fab work I would of had to do with the other panel (would not be wide enough) , but I was trying to save some $$$ by using the other one. He is easy to work with, and will use him for my other metal down the road. I Already had the corner from Ronnie at Bustoration.

And I fabbed up a new splash panel a few weeks ago. The original was a little crusty...
