I came very close to sorting it out the old fashioned way but I realized the people I was getting angry at who were air grinding just over the fence from our car park making all the dust were not responsible for the facility, they were just immigrant workers too worried about putting food on the table to speak up about the disgraceful work practice their bosses set out for them. Yeah there's one guy, I hear him, he's already screwed. Always coughing. Real chronic.
Well I'm probably doing them a favour if Workcover shuts the place down. The bosses will probably install better water grinding machines and dust extraction units. Right now they are being criminally negligent.

btw. I'm loving my modified adjustable height car dolly. Lowered it today and rolled it out all with one hand to give the car a wash. It rolls around a lot easier too with the cast iron castors. the jacks are trailer hitches I got on sale. Had to do a job on it though cause the original castors weren't designed to swivel around much cause they would wind the jack up or down as they would swivel on the winding strut. I ended up cutting the old rubber non swiveling castors off and welding steel swivel castors on the bottom as I've mentioned before.

Starting to assemble the front end and dig out all the parts I put away.
Here we have the Square back front stabilizer which I'm gonna install in lieu of the thinner original. Not sure how much this is gonna improve handling cause I don't have a benchmark to go by but I've read in various places that it's an improvement.

These are the Febi Bilstein ball joints I'm gonna use. They're expensive but I don't think I'm gonna need to change them out too soon.

how much were they?

its interesting that the bar is 14mm. Everyone who said they were bigger said 13mm.

14 over 11 is a significant increase in stiffness!

If you look on the box you'll see sticker price is $76aud. ea.
Yeah I did get a bit of a discount off that price but consider that frequent flyer rewards cause they are my best stocked local supplier.

I 'm not sure if there are any left though. The box he pulled them
from looked kinda light.

Thats not too bad. The most I've paid for a ball joint on any car is $78 for a genuine OEM ball joint.

Got lucky today. Was having a chat to my dad about the immaculate bay window 79 Kombi he used to own and love and I recalled he used to be fanatical about his oil and oil changes. I said "didn't you have some kind of trick oil filter?"
He said "Yeah I still got it somewhere in the garage, took it off before we sold the car". Unfortunately he had to sell the car after he had a stroke about 20 years ago but he just couldn't seem to part with the filter - till now!
So this is my dad's contribution to my type 3 build, I appear to have a Trasko "Oil refining system" paper filter housing for my type 3. The literature on their website says it filters down to 1/10th of a micron and oil life is extended.

So I'm stuffing around trial fitting suspension components and ran into a bit of a snag. I bought some of those squeaky red urethane bushes a while back but seems that either I bought the wrong ones or they are tighter than a fish's arse. No way they were going on. Was told they need to be pressed on but I just couldn't see it stretching as much as it needed.

Anyhow I think I got the 1 3/4 inch ones but what I measure on the spring plate is 1 7/8" so I did the ring around and no-one had any in Sydney.

Anyhow I figured they're cheap enough to have a gamble at machining the inside out but its no easy lathe job cause the outside is tapered and those lugs are in the way.

I decided since it's the weekend and I got nowhere to be I'd tinker around and have a go at this even if I stuffed it.

Made a little jig to hold it and a centering plug to help locate it before I tightened up the bolts and bored out the centre on the mill. Fits like a glove now. It's right on size. Just a little push on with moly grease. The machining marks might also help transport the grease better so maybe they won't squeak.

have you tried the superpro bushes?

they make the spring plate bushes.

The reason I suggest them is because their bushes last years and years with 100,000s of abusive county Ks

all the other brands seem to fail in months to weeks. And they are usually red the cheap nasty ones.

I just need to get it together and keep moving forward. Gonna use these ones for now cause I bought them before I knew there were black ones with some kinda self lubricating particles impregnated in it. I'll have other opportunities to check on them and swap them out later when I start tweaking the ride height and I got some good moly grease to pack in there so I think that'll make a difference.

cool beans!

I am pretty sure the graphite impregnated ones can be bought from California somewhere. It was posted on the aussie forum somewhere.

I like that idea though of having self lube bushings.

As for the grease. I found moly grease included with red nolthane bushes dry out and starts to chew up the bushes pretty quick.

superpro used to use a lithium type white grease? worked well. now they use a silicone based lube which is superior. Its just keeps lubricating and lubricating.

I think I'll have some sachels left over so if you need some I can post them to you if you like.

All good. Mine came with the white silicon lube satchels too. I don't think I'll leave em in there too long. I'm actually kinda interested to see if they wear out prematurely or if it's got to do with some other factor. I got the grease recommended by Mike at Vintage Veedub. It came in white satchels but its a black moly grease.

Getting this thing back together. Removed the powdercoat from the spring plate grommet bearing surface.

Didn't have a pitch guage but my iphone had the Stanley level app so I got it dialed to 18.5degrees both sides. I'll worry about lowering it later after I get it on the road.

Just need to make myself a spring compression tool now so I can lift it into position and tighten down the bolts completely. Not sure if anyone else has had this problem but as I'm using IRS component on what was originally a swing axle sub frame I had a hell of a time lining up the 4 outside grommet plate holes with the ones on the main torsion housing.
Damn I gotta fix that. It's out enough to turn a 1 minute job into a 20 minute swearing session.

I use 3 threaded all the way 75mm x 10 X 1.50 bolts, and compress the plate down, until I can replace them with the stock bolts. Wink I even have a couple of spacers I use to get me closer (so I'm not threading more than I need to). Very Happy

Bobnotch it was the alignment of the holes which was different. I had slightly longer bolts so getting them close was not the problem, but lining up the fourth bolt when all the other bolts had stacked up .5mm of tolerance difference was a bit of a problem.
I think I have to drill out the grommet plate about 1/2 mm in each of the four holes cause its gonna really annoy me every time I need to put the plate on.

Ok, I didn't know VW changed the locations of holes on the cover plate. Your solution sounds like it'll work though.
