Here's the condition of the rear brakes
Surprisingly, the drums are in good shape. I'll blast and paint em, then take them to work to have them turned smooth. Backing plates will get a similar treatment, sans the turning part. Got new wheel cylinders, shoes, hardware, and new outer seal.

Not much to report. My truck has been taking up my time the past few days (It drives again!)
I did find out that the transmission the PO put in is a 3 rib bus flavor. Which as far as I can tell, is a nice upgrade

Started in on sandblasting the brake parts the other day. Ran out of gas for the compressor, and had to wait for my paycheck to hit before I could do some more. And it's just my luck, now that I'm here I don't have the time to do anything
Filed for taxes for the first time last week, and I'll be getting a sizable chunk back. Not as much as I had hoped, because my parents still claimed me as a dependent so I couldn't claim myself. Regardless, that money I'm getting back will buy the Alternator kit, the master cylinder and reservoir, brake line kit, brake hoses, and a little bit will go towards some wire and the wire ends I need for the fuse block. So hopefully, once I get some time freed up, I'll have plenty of stuff to keep me busy.

Ordered up all my brake stuff yesterday, and today my dad told me that he and my mom were going to be buying me the exhaust I want as an early birthday present so this evening we ordered up a Tri Mill bobtail glasspack exhaust
Used a heat gun and a scraper to get all the old undercoating out from the rear wheel arches, and got a new coat of bedliner down
Removed the carb and generator in preparation of the alternator conversion kit. Getting an 85 amp kit and a fuel pump block off plate.
--
Now, what have I been doing in the time I could have been working on my car? Shredding the gnar of course! 20 inches of fresh POW at the time. And yes, that is a beard.

First set of parts showed up on Friday. My dog approves...
Did a test fit
Going to have to take off the a/c pulley on the crankshaft, because the drivers side crossover pipe doesn't clear
Finally got my ass in gear and re-attached all the steering gear and did an alignment (to the best of my ability)
The rest of the ~$500 in parts I ordered should be in Monday and Tuesday.

Getting parts is awesome! Now I just gotta figure out when my shipment of "free time" will show up. Unfortunately, the tracking number on it doesn't work
---
And speaking of parts...
Type 3 master cyl, reservoir, metal brake line kit and rubber hoses.
85A Alternator conversion kit, carb spacers, gaskets, and door seals
Had a little working time today. Finally got my compressor working again, because after I filled it up with gas, the carb took a dump and needed a rebuild. Got it all put back together, and finished blasting the drums. I didn't snap any pictures, but they are currently drying after a coat of primer, and will get painted tomorrow. Started in on giving a quick blast to the exhaust pipes for better paint adhesion. Had to leave for school before I was able to get any further.

Yeah seriously...
Got the alt kit through Airhead Parts. Don't remember the brand off the top of my head. It's not Bosch, because I ain't made of money. It's their $190 full kit with natural color alt/stand, and black tin. Came with the tins, shims, pulley, stand, strap, alt, belt, etc. Then I got a new oil deflector and a carb spacer.

Alright, so here are a few different things rolled into one post...
Lets start with the easy stuff. Sandblasted the rest of the exhaust and got the parts primed, and I did two coats of paint on the drums. I'll take em to work tomorrow and turn them smooth.
Before:
After:
Primed:
Painted:
Number next, got the steering column re-installed, but I can't get the damn machine screws that hold the turn signal switch in
Now, moving to the back of the car I worked on the fuel pump block off, and ran into something interesting. When I pulled the fuel pump off, the base piece came off as well. It appears that the little plastic tube that the pushrod runs through snapped of the main plate a while back. When I tried to get the remainder out of the block, it sheared off down near the crank. I cranked the engine over a few times by hand, and it doesn't look like it will be an issue, but I have no clue.
Lookin fine without the fuel pump
Lastly, I've got some alternator confusion. I bought a conversion kit, and naturally came with a new stand. But, when I pulled the old stand and went to get the new one, I noticed that they look identical, despite the fact that I pulled an generator off. So I'm curious as to what's going on.
Alternator fits the same on both, but runs into the filler/breather cap on the old one
The part # cast into the back of the stock stand is 113 101 211g, and it has the "zündfolge 1-4-3-2" cast in the front.
---
Well, that's all for now. Back to work tomorrow.

Looks like fun with new parts. I can't tell from the picture but you might consider a spot weld on the back of those wheel studs to drum. |

A generator will fit on an alternator stand, but an alternator will only fit on an alternator one. Looks like someone installed a generator on an alternator stand at some point.
I'd be a little concerned about the primer/paint on the brake shoe surface on your drums though. |

That's what I was figuring. And that's entirely possible, because according to the PO its a later model mexi engine.
I'll be turning the drums today at work, so it will be bare metal. If I had turned them beforehand, I would not have been able to paint.

So here we have the turned drums. Nothing like a little flash to reveal my lazy paint job
Alternator looks great when everything is installed
Longer studs and spacer installed in the carb. Doesn't seem like it needed the extra space, but I put it on anyways
Dropped the gas tank off with the welder a couple days ago. Anybody know the proper orientation for a SAE 5 bolt fuel sender flange? It looked to me that the holes are not evenly spaced, so I don't want to get it welded on in the wrong direction. If I had the sender it wouldn't be an issue, but I don't have one yet :/
----
Had today off from work b/c it's my birthday, so I spent the day tinkering on the car. And then the icing on the (birthday) cake? My dad and I got the car to run again we hastily wired a few of the things up at the end due to lack of time, and right as we were about to start it we found the gas can was empty. So, in the video it's running on saw gas, 50:1 with premium gas and synth oil...

Finally getting around to updating here. Finals were keeping me from doing much work on the bug. I've got some parts on order, so hopefully when I'm on spring break next week I can can get a couple things slammed out.
Exhaust:
I started out with a grey paint, but after painting it I decided I didn't like how light it was. It was almost an aluminum shade of grey. So I ended up going with black. All in all, 2 coats of primer, 1 coat of grey, 2 coats of black, and 2 coats of clear. I then cured them in the kitchen oven, which surprisingly didn't smell that bad.
Finally got the rear brake job finished, so I got her sitting on all 4 feet again
Mounted up the rear fenders so I could get an idea of how I want to mount the lights I have coming in tomorrow (I really don't like this angle of shot on the rear for some reason...)
I then moved onto the inside. I only had enough screws to mount one window, so I did that, put door gaskets in, and for the hell of it mounted the rearview mirror again.
More to come!

Been working primarily on the lighting the past few days. Dropped a goodly amount on some clear lens LED lights for the back of the car. Originally I wanted to mount the lamps in the fenders, but after some contemplation and discussion with some people here, I decided against it. I do like how it turned out.
I decided to use some 90 degree mounting brackets, and put one on top and one below the cage.
Spaced the holes, and drilled/tapped them. The mount uses a 3/8 bolt, so I used a 3/8-24NF tap to get as many threads in the small amount of material I had to work with.
Used all stainless steel hardware to reduce the risk of rust. Used red loctite on the bolts, and tightened them down. Couldn't put a huge amount of torque on them without stripping them out.
Tail only
Tail/turn
And here is us dicking around with the lights and some power from a jump box (10A)
Link
---
If anyone is interested, I can give ya all the part numbers for lights, grommets, pigtails, and brackets. Spent about $120 overall, but it would normally cost in the neighborhood of $150-200 (employee discount at work )

Here comes a flood of photos. I'll start out with the electrical I've been working on.
Most of the rear of the car is now wired and loomed. Lights, engine, etc.
Loose wires are for backup lights, on order
Some of the things I've bought so far in my attempts to simplify the electrical have started to make it a little more interesting. The fuse block is a main buss style, so I've got 2 lugs on the back; one side runs switched power and the other side is unswitched power. Makes for some good and some bad things.
Terminals are fun to crimp
Universal headlight switch, getting rid of the bizarre stock wiring...
I've got headlights on order so hopefully I can start working on the front wiring harnesses next week.
---
During all this, I found out that the Type 3 master cylinder I bough was going to take a little work to make fit and get all the lines attached. My dad took the charge, and managed to make it work. Not the prettiest, but not sure if I could have done any better
Hard to see what's going on, but the brake switches are on the outside, the rear line bends up and got coupled to another line that wraps up by the fluid tank, and the drivers side front got spun down around underneath the MC and coupled to another short line (the one that's looped) to run out to the hose.
The main run to the passenger side had to go through the tunnel. I'll stick a rubber bushing on either side so it doesn't chafe.
...And a very blurry photo of everything up front in it's place.
--
That's about all I've got for now. Thin paycheck means I won't be doing as much this go around.

Few more things, here and there.
Wired up a generic dimmer switch
Got my fancy new headlights with an amber halo. Relativity nice quality, glass and aluminum. I've had nicer lenses in this price range, but they didn't have halos.
You have to buy this little controller to go along with the halos. It toggles the LED's between their high and low settings so you can have your parking lights on and use your turn signals.
There is enough room in your run of the mill headlight buckets to have the controller housed inside (don't worry, it's more securely fastened now)
Low setting (Parking/DRL)
High setting (Turn signal)
---
Got my gas tank back from the welder. Had him weld in the fuel tank sender flange, and a new fuel bung.
New bung is offset to the drivers side, because the tank has to sit slightly off center, and the bung had to move in order to line up with the hole I'm using for the fuel line. (You can see where the old one was just to the left of the new one)
Sitting pretty until I get the rest of the mounting done.
