All three major carriers made trips out to my house on Thursday Fedex brought me new tie rods ends and a cal look rear window gasket, USPS brought me gaskets for my truck transmission, and UPS brought me a new roll of pinch welt for the pop out windows
Now, time to go to work. That is, once I get some spare time :\

"Get a bug, they're cheap!"
Mmhm. Sure parts are cheap, but so far it's been nickle and diming me dry
While measuring for wheel spacers a couple days ago, I noticed one of the lower ball joints had a torn boot, and the ball inside was rusty. An upper ball joint on the other side had a torn boot as well. So here I am, the proud owner of 4 new ball joints This is my first time ever doing ball joints of any kind, and so far it's not going good. I've borrowed a c-clamp style ball joint press from my boss and the only thing I've managed to do is blow the stud out the back on one of the lowers. Gotta get in with a socket now and see if I can finish pressing it out.
--
Mocked up some of the dash today. I've decided to get oil pressure and oil temperature gauges, so I can better keep an eye on things. I'll still wire in idiot lights, but I'd like to have gauges as well. While it may sound easy, trying to find locations for 2 3-3/8" inch gauges and 4 2-1/16" gauges in a stock-ish location is not easy. After a couple (failed) attempts trying to visualize it, I went and dug out the dash panel, the drivers seat, and steering wheel. I've got a setup that I think will work. The switches will be moving towards the passenger side more.
Incandescent idiot lights, LED turn signal and high beam indicators.
Rough location of the steering wheel. If it's closer to the dash than I'm holding it now, the voltmeter will be partially blocked. If I just tilt my head it's all back in place.
--
Lastly, I'm prepping for hanging the headliner on Monday. I have one of the 5 piece kits. My dad and I are hoping to get all of the main piece done, and possibly the other locations. We've set aside the whole day for it.

Fixed a couple of the photos.

Started in on the headliner today. I would've liked to have gotten more done, but I suppose I can't complain.
Began with the door posts. After getting the material into the gripper, I realized we didn't have enough padding down. So added some more.
After the posts were done, started on the main piece. I don't have any pics of how far we got, but it's secured on the drivers door grippers, the front, and the back.
Is it perfect? No. Do I care if it's a little wrinkled? Nope. It's my first time ever doing a headliner like this, so I'm not too picky

Un-glued parts of the headliner, and stretched/clipped other parts to get an idea of what I need to do in order to get everything smooth. So far, it looks much better than last night's attempt
Wheel spacers showed up in the mail today
After multiple failed attempts to remove the front ball joints with the torsion arms still on the car, I decided it was best to just pop the trailing arms off and take them to the shop (AKA my boss)
Nice and new
Just waiting on new tube seals now.

Have you been having troubles? I find if I spend more than ten minutes there lately it locks up my browser. Pages load real slow/infinitely. Haven't figured out how to fix besides disconnecting and starting over.
Good going on the headliner. You got more patience than I. _________________ Brian H.

It has been a little slow recently, but my biggest complaint right now is their "bandwidth limit". If you look at the previous pages in my thread, any pictures not uploaded to a flickr are now blocked because I've hit the 10 gig/month bandwidth limit.
Thanks! Fortunately, I can do repetitive and/or tedious work for hours when I'm in the mood. The hand sanded wheels took 2 hours of sanding each

My dad's been working on the headliner more. We ended up un-gluing parts of the front and back, then loosely clipping everything around the window openings. Started above the drivers side door, and have since worked our way around to the passenger side door grippers. After that, we'll go to the back

I have a window
Only have the lower rear window piece left on the headliner, then we'll clean glue over spray off and see if we can chase some of the wrinkles out with a heat gun

In other news, VW Axle nut: 1 and Jameson: 0
Borrowed a 3/4 inch 1100 ft/lb breakaway impact gun plus some sockets from my boss. He didn't have a 36 mil impact socket, or a 3/4 inch 36 mil chromey socket. He gave me a 3/4 to half inch reducer. I told him it'd probably shear, because these nuts are notorious for getting stuck on really good, but he insisted I try it before buying the proper impact. So, here we are, and I'll be ordering a 36 mil 3/4 inch drive impact socket

I had the same results my first time doing mine. I started by making my own wacker, that got them free. I ended up with a 3/4 drive hard socket down to a 1/2 hard adapter and ditched the impact and only do it by hand. Some heat to the nut helps a ton too. Oh and a 6' length of pipe on a breaker bar not a ratchet. |

I attempted twice this evening
1st time was with 1/2 inch drive breaker bar, and 6 foot cheater pipe. Tried heating up the nut, used a BFH, bounced up and down on the pipe, not even a squeak out of the nut.
2nd try was with said impact gun, and a socket that is slightly larger than the nut. Full power on the nut, and the gun just sat there clicking. Now while the gun may be able to do 1100 lb/ft breakaway, that's at 150 psi. My largest compressor (which is a ferd 302 monoblock behemoth) only cranks out 125 psi with a flow rate 120 cfm's. So it's very possible that the gun isn't living up to it's full potential.
That being said, even if it was only doing in the neighborhood of 500 lb/ft of torque, I would think that would at least crack it. But as far as I can tell, nothing has moved.

So far, propane/fake mapp gas isn't cutting it. Doesn't get hot enough, at least very quickly. 4 minutes didn't get it. Sure would be nice having a oxy/act torch... (it's on my list of tools I want/need but can't afford )
Getting the appropriate sized impact socket tomorrow. I'll see if someone has some oxy/act I can borrow, and give it a go _________________ Vehicles:

Is the tire holding still? I was able to get a very rusted nut off withe a 1/2 drive , propane torch, penetrating lube and a hammer. This was a trailing arm off the car. In the past friends and I have broken many half inch drive ratchets and breaker bars. My friends dad found a monster breaker bars from the military.
The small one is the one I used , it's bent and the ratchet is missing a tooth. When I have the big one I just push hard and the nuts come right off. _________________ My build page

Finally got those dang nuts off. Got the 3/4 inch drive impact socket, and then heated the nuts up quite a bit with the torch. Even with all that, the gun still sat there for about 10-15 seconds just clicking, and the nut wasn't moving. Eventually, they broke free. Opened up the rear brakes, and they are in a similar condition to the front. I should be able to salvage the drums, so I'll sandblast em and get the faces turned. All that will be free, as opposed to $45 a piece for new ones. So I'll give it a go before I invest in new ones.
New torsion tube seals showed up in the mail a few days ago, so I was able to put the front end back together. Got everything mounted, and was finally able to set the front down again.
I also ordered up a fuse block. I considered going with the stock style, but decided on a bussman mini fuse block. It's a 20 circuit, fully sealed. The 2 sides are separate busses, so I can run one side switched power and the other constant power.
I'll throw up some pictures later. I'm at school now, and the firewall blocks Flickr...
