Hopefully this helps explain my predicament. If I jack under the rear of the heater channels I can get the valance and exhaust to line up:
But.... does this look right? I dont want to weld this up on the basis that my aftermarket valance lines up with my aftermarket exhaust and potentially have everything out of alignment. I would rather modify the parts or buy again. Is the crank pulley now too low in relation to the valance?
The picture is taken from above the vehicle aswell so it is probably even higher than it looks on the pulley. _________________ '68 build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=557899 |

Sorry I don't have a level shot from the ground. But I hope this helps a little.
If you look in my gallery there are a few from the side but nothing that great... mine looks like it is right at the nut. So yours maybe a little high |

Thanks for posting Original. Looks like you are making good progress with your build!
The more I look at pictures of other cars the more I think that no 2 are the same! Found quite a lot of images that look much higher than this and a whole bunch that look about the same, some even look lower!
I realised I already had pretty good reference for before:
Looks a tiny bit lower than before I think but must be pretty close. _________________ '68 build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=557899 |

I finally got out of college and started in the workforce so I finally ordered my floor pans! Now I have all the metal I should need to finish mine. at least when you do new floor pans and channels you can make them align to each other instead of having to make them perfect with the old. i hope to make time next month to go install the floor pans and hopefully the heater channels. Soon mine will look as good as yours. Have you decided on a color yet? |

Hi Ian, the weather has me pretty much at a stand still so not a great deal to report on here. Got the rear body mounts welded in and been doing a bit of rubbing down when mother nature allows. Hope to be ready for paint as soon as it gets dry again in the spring.
To be honest the rear apron panel is probably one of the best fitting out of all the panels I bought [and I think I pretty much bought them all!]! Probably because it is relatively simple. Mine doesn't fit well at the top where the seal channel meets but this is all hidden by the decklid so I am happy with it. Generally it looks pretty close to the original, isn't particularly flimsy and isn't full of rust and filler! I don't know how much you would have to pay for one but mine seemed good value.
Mine wont be welded in so I am going to modify the edges to have holes where the wing bolts will fit through. _________________ '68 build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=557899 |

Been a while... the winter is relenting and spring sunshine is here for now.
Hi-pacs installed:
And lugage area is about 40% finished. This is the last area that needs repairs, although I will be replacing some seal channel front and rear.
Big push is on to break the back of this and start the reassemble process. _________________ '68 build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=557899 |

Both luggage area sides and inner rear quarters finished off:
I have some new seal channel for here, welded up some small holes [and some not so small ones...]
And the only place in my drip rail that needed repair is done:

TX - thanks for the link, always nice to see how somebody else has tackled the problem.
Hi Ian, cheers for the comment and suggestions. I am very happy that the car is now as solid as I can make it.
The secret to welding thin metal is use a heat sink on the back, I use the head of an old copper hammer. Copper is ideal as its a great conductor of heat and the weld will not stick! You might need to turn your settings up but you can get the thinnest metal welded up. Obviously no good if you cant get to the back of where you are welding tho...
Was thinking of picking up one of these: http://www.frost.co.uk/auto-bodywork-welding-metal...lding.html
Played with some paint today - first time so its all learning.
Pro setup!
Fish eyes?
Assume this is some kind or reaction:
In the end after a few coats and a few sanding sessions, and cleaning with degreaser and washing it properly I got an OK result, still have one area where the paint reacted with something so need to fix that.
I'm actually surprised, I was expecting much more reaction based on all the bad press cellulose gets, of all the many layers of old paint I don't think it has had trouble with any of them, just contamination on the panel I think caused my issues.
If its nice tomorrow I will try and get some top coat on this - not even cracked the tin open yet so no idea if its close to the colour I wanted when I ordered it in August last year! _________________ '68 build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=557899 |

Good news is the doors still fit:
Bad news is the rust repairs, so much for hanging up the welder!
Making good progress with the bonnet - hoping to get it painted while the sun is shining. _________________ '68 build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=557899 |

Well bonnet top coated - far from perfect but calling it done for now.
Jim[/url]
And number plate light shroud.
Moving on to the wings next but the weather has got a little damper so probably just prep work. _________________ '68 build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=557899 |

Weather not so good this week so no painting.
Cut holes for master cylinder and started getting the pedal assembly together.
42mm hole saw
I made the pedal stop bolt hole too far back so I need to do a little fixing on that and weld the bottom plate in.
I was dreading this job but it went pretty smoothly even if it took almost all day. _________________ '68 build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=557899 |

For the seal channels since the metal is so thin maybe consider using panel adhesive. No welds to grind and it gives a good clean look |

Thanks for the suggestion RLFD, I have already replaced the channel for the top of the bonnet. I think I will just remove the rest and use mexican seals but dont need to decide just yet.
Rubbing down panels [especially my crusty old ones] is a real PIA. I have the other 2 wings and removable valance almost ready for paint.
I have also started taking a little look at the drivers door:
and picked up a repair panel - hopefully the last one! Why it has a drilled hole next to the hinge I have no idea.
Luckily the passenger door is very solid. _________________ '68 build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=557899 |
