Took the body off again and adjusted the new nap hat. Put the body back on, bolted up the pans and tacked in the nap hat. Gave the pedal cluster some POR15.
Welding in the pans next. |

UK weather, holidays and loss of motivation behind me I continue with this project.
A nice easy weekend and the frame-head floor is tacked in place.
Which meant I could start welding in the pans:
If I can get this side finished and the other side welded in by the end of this weekend I will be happy. Aside from the mechanicals and a coat of paint that will be the chassis sorted.
Looking pretty good from underneath:
More as a motivational exercise than anything else I got some of the Marina blue paint out:
I like! |

I wont lie - I have been worried about getting back into it and how long this is going to take me. I have set a target of getting it painted by the end of the summer which I think is realistic.
After the pans are fixed I need to tackle the rear body mounts. I have no idea how I am going to sort them out yet! |

I asked a couple people about the same one one way I heard was to undo all the spot welds around the extra plate remove it then mark your cut. Then attach the body and remove the extra plate from the new one and bolt it on through the part on the pan. Then mark every thing up so you can get the alignment right and tac it into place with the body attached to the pan where you want it.
sorry that probably doesnt make much sense. Easier shown than said. |

The pans are welded in, a little extra work will be required on the chassis before painting. Just the bits I couldn't get to while the body is still on.
Thanks for the info on the wheel arches Original. I will take a look around and see what others have done. Hope to make a decent start next weekend. |

Looks like you replaced all the same areas that I ended up replacing on my 74 Super. And you're right, sometimes motivation is an issue, and you just have to step away for a while and regroup. Sometimes just looking at the pictures of all the work you've already got behind you is all it takes. Being way past the point of no return, it get easier as you get closer since all the work at the end really begins to show the efforts of all the work. New paint can do a lot for that last final push of assembly. Keep up the good work!! _________________ scrapyards are for quitters

Thanks for the comments guys - its good to hear from others going through the same ordeal!
The third productive weekend in a row sees some more progress, RHS rear wheel well is repaired. A scary job because of how much metal had to be removed. Still need to fix the inside but the outer is good and solid. Also need to get the body mount on and fix the fender nuts.
Pretty happy with how it turned out. I may have developed a blue paint problem!
Before:
Not much under here but filler and rust:
Badly fitting repair panel in place:
Painted Blue for inspiration!
Whether any of this will fit when I drop the body again remains to be seen...
Inside still needs some patches and stitching up:

Just got some replacement engine tray sides from Hookys panel shop. Top quality and highly recommended.

Here are those engine sides I mentioned:
So crisp, neat and tidy compared to all the Klokkerholm I have been using!
Anyway, another decent day on the rear o/s quarter. Believe it or not my welding is improving. Butt welding in some patches for the fender nuts. 2 done and the 3rd one is made ready to weld in tomorrow.
Fitting the wing to make sure the new nuts are in the right position:
Almost looks like a bloody Beetle!
Cutting some patches:
2 down and one to go:
I assume these fender nuts rusted out a long time ago, any advice on what I can do to the sheet metal screw holes that the PO made to hold the wings on would be appreciated. I don't really relish the thought of another 5/6 tiny patches on each wheel arch... |

If your welding is really improving, time to just weld those tiny holes shut. Another technique to master. Lower heat and a light touch, and you should be able to close them up. _________________ scrapyards are for quitters

Thanks beetlenut, I guess I knew the answer already. I will do a few more of these patches before I give it a go. Your build thread is a real inspiration btw. |

Yea, thanks. Been stuck in a bit of a rut myself after painting the body last Fall. Almost done wet sanding it. I've found out that amateur painting is like amateur welding, but instead of lots of grinding, it's lots of wet sanding! _________________ scrapyards are for quitters

3 more fender nuts replaced:
Then my welder started playing up... hope it decides to play ball this weekend. If not I will probably do the front beam and ponder buying something a little more heavy duty. |

A while back I made a little bracket for the washer button:

Just need to shorten the brass push-rod a little and done. 3D printing is pretty handy. |

Can anyone tell me if the part outlined in green is just a repair panel? Can I just weld my new body mount [in red] directly in without this backing piece?
Thanks in advance. |
