Alright, so I tried feel-checking the mechanical advance with the distributor indexed in the engine instead of on the bench, and there was a bit of resistance in the retard direction that my fingers could nudge it past. This was NOT the same as out of the engine:

THEN… I checked to see if the play was in my Mallory… It was!!! So I checked the drive dog for play:

So every distributor has this "play" I've been looking for. Problem is, only DVDAs have the brunt of vacuum retard pulling on it all the time. Is this much play normal? _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

That amount of play is pretty normal for a used engine. _________________ Glenn

Hi, you may try a new drive gear. The brass drive gear is replaced more often do to being damaged when pressing the gear off.
Also Wilson talks about shimming the drive gear. This can account for additional timing variations. If you do this. Do yourself a favor and braze the shims together. Bad enough having one shim to deal with.
Good Luck |

Hi 1500, just to confirm. The 853 you have, does not have the dimple in it?
Thank You

The 853 can I have has a dimple in it. My question still is "does it matter?" If an 853 can is needed as original spec...then bolt it up and check the final curve on a dizzy machine. Again, the arm bottoms on the housing from the inner frame(as I illustrated)..
Now...if you are thinking about an 851 Vac can, that is a different story. You need the distributor, the engine and the carburetor for it. |

Thank you 1500. It would be easy enough to test.
Pull a vacuum on the 853 and if the arm stops moving before the limiting stop hits. The dimple is limiting the advance travel.
I could see Bosch putting a dimple in the can cover. This would probably be more cost effective. Rather than making the tooling and stamping out another arm. They simply press a dimple in the can cover?
They may have had a run of X amount of arms in stock and needed to use them?
Thanks again

I have an 034 SVDA distributor. The can works and I might take it all apart to clean etc. If I do, the only things I need to be careful of OR have replacements for are the fiber washer and the two plastic clips that hold the shaft down right? And can those parts be taken off one of those Chinese 034 distributors? _________________ 03/1971, 1302 Super Beetle 1600 dual port

Hello
I might take it all apart to clean etc
Just clean it with WD40 and grease where the weights ride and put a few drops of oil down the middle.
have replacements for are the fiber washer and the two plastic clips
You may want to have a fiber washer on hand. You can use vacuum hose in place of the plastic clips.
And can those parts be taken off one of those Chinese 034 distributors

I'm not sure what's in the Amazon link page, but the eBay kit contains nothing usable besides washers, which you can find at Fastenal, Grainger, or McMaster-Carr for a few cents each. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

Hmm interesting. Thanks Tcash.
By vacuum hose do you mean shrink wrap?
Do you know of any place I can source a fibre washer bearing in mind I am outside of the US and have no swap meets near me? _________________ 03/1971, 1302 Super Beetle 1600 dual port

This is vacuum hose.
You cut two small pieces and slide one on where the spring goes put the spring on. Then slide the other piece on above the spring. This way the spring rides between the two pieces of vacuum hose.

No I do not. Look for a hardware supplier in your area as asiab3 suggested.
Fastenal, Grainger, or McMaster
If you do not take it apart the fiber washers should stay in place.

Hi
I could find the steel washers in the past. But was unable to locate the big and small fiber washers. Would you have a source for these.
Thank You

I have a similar dvda distributor - 205AN. But im confused . The #1 notch on the rim doesn't line up with the tdc. Its at 1o'clock instead of 5 o'clock. The distributor is identical to the one in the rebuild photos. Is there something wrong, and how do you make this work? This is regarding the original post from page 1 . |

Is your distributor installed in the engine? If so, your drive gear could be installed wrong. Or you could have the whole thing rotated incorrectly. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

No, not installed. I tried yesterday when I discovered this issue. The drive shaft lines up like the haynes manual shows. _________________ 1970 Beetle -stock project/ dailey driver |

Good write up.
I have a few pointers:
Oil the heck out of the shaft before you install it in the housing.
The orientation of the drive dog is different on some of the later distributors like this one compared to earlier distributors ie: 180 difference.
The 009 you showed only has one advance spring when stock. You can ad a second which dampens the advance.
I've never encountered a stock roll pin holding the drive dog in place, they've all been solid. They are reusable if not beat up too badly. I lay the drive dog on the edge of my vice thusly keeping it from rolling around, and whack it with a BFH and the pin will come out.
On the later units like the 211 Q the points plate rarely just "slides out". Sometimes it must be rotated to clear a cleat that hold the bottom plate in place.
I like to stuff a paper towel around the points cam when I am removing the points cam circlip as they can make deep space orbit if your not careful. I also prefer to remove the distributor shaft and cam together as one unit since it makes it easier to work on them removed from the housing. |
So the drive dog is different from the distributor I have set up now.. how do you set this type up? _________________ 1970 Beetle -stock project/ dailey driver |

You have to align index the dist. drive gear.
Or it is possible that someone put the drive dog on 180 deg off. No matter.
Find tdc
index drive gear
install dist.
put #1 spark plug wire on dist cap where the rotor points to. |

Ok, I understand now. My old distributors notch on the rim points to 5 o'clock, the dvda points to 1 o'clock. I just need to put the spark plug wires on accordingly. Although I think this dvda needs to be rebuilt. The points plate is loose and when I turn the rotor something is slightly grinding... I did find and purchase a new mexican bosch svda on the busdepot. Ill try and fix the old dist for a spare. Thanks for the help! _________________ 1970 Beetle -stock project/ dailey driver |

I know this an old post but does anyone know where I can advance and retard springs for Bosch distributors that fit type 1 VW Beetle.
I've got a couple of part numbers 059 998 211 or 1237 010 007.One is VW and the other is Bosch. I live the other side of the pond in UK but I'm quite happy to get in touch with supplier in USA
