This weekend, I came across an old debris field from an Lockheed L-1049 airplane that crashed in the Sangre de Cristo mountains on December 15, 1965 and I couldn't find squat about it online (other than what I just disclosed).

I plan to go to the library to see if they still have micro-fiche (never thought I'd do that again), but it got me to wondering if there are any online resources for really old news? I was surprised that my internet search for online newspaper archives didn't turn up very much - some pay sites like newspaperarchive.com and wiki had an extensive list of mostly pay sites by state for various newspapers.

Anyone have any good online news archive links?

Yeah, my hiking buddy emailed that to me after I posted here. That gives a much better picture of what happened. At the crash site, there is a plaque with a prayer and the names of the pilots and the date. There was a tire, a cabin door, and chunks of wings and fuselage and what appeared to be a small crater blasted out of solid rock near the plaque. It certainly peaked my curiosity...

There is an almanac with all of the plane crashes going back as early as the 40's I used to look at as A kid.. For some reason I was intrigued by plane crashes.. I think I might have it somewhere, not sure if it would give you any more info then listed above. I don't recall it having any pictures..

You may be able to find something here unless this is where the information already posted came from. But even if it is, there are hours of interesting crashes on this site.

A good library will have a staff that can search their index files for you. Reader's Guide for periodicals, and a newspaper index whose name I can't remember.
Many libraries have laid off their research staff so you may have to try a university library nearby. Usually, as long as you are not checking out material you won't need a campus I'd or library card.
I used to work in one. There are resources for this.

Marklaken, I would be happy to pass along contact information for my brothers in Alamosa. They were part of the local search & rescue team that was dispatched to the site of the crash on December 16th with Alamosa Sheriff Ben Phillips. Sincerely, K Lorenz
