gauges came in… they look sharp!

First, let's warm up the headliner…

Apologies for being out of focus - I did not realize it at the time. I clipped the entire headliner in there, and section by section, I glued it in there, I haven't yet used the hairdryer, but there will be very little to do. It went in there easier than I expected.

Seal went on easily enough. The T trim - need to preform the metal as much as possible. Some white grease and it pops right in.

I used some wire and again white grease to pop the windows in - it worked quite well except for some sort of issue i nthe rear - I'll try to salvage this, but I might have to start over.

Overall it's not that tough. I like the results.

WRONG!!! There was no clear reference to this in the Bentley service manual. I had this thrust washer/ring (?) on reversed. This way, as I tightened the bearing cover bolts, the ring threatened to push the seal out - it certainly was distorting the seal. UGLY! So off it came… and flipped around BEVELED SIDE OUT it went.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

THIS is the way it goes on Problem now was that it was distorting and pushing the spring out. I solved that by pressing the thrust washer through the seal while in my hand rather than on the axle.

I had better start torquing everything to spec before I miss something...

This is not quite right. Notice the outer dust lip on your seal is not making contact on the spacer? Look closely on the photos to see where the outer edge of the seal was on the spacer before.

You are right that putting the seal holder / bearing retainer on with the spacer on the stub axle will distort the seal.

Put the tapered side on the bearing side. Put the spacer in the seal then install the seal and retainer as an assembly.

When you are done (and the seal is seated correctly) the outer lip of the seal will seal to the spacer and the square shoulder of the spacer will show outside the dust lip.

The brake drum is soft compared to the bearing race and spacer. The small contact area of the tapered side is meant to go on the inner race of the roller bearing and the large contact area to the brake drum.

The small area can cause the brake drum to fret on the spacer and lose torque on the axle and take out the bearings, drum and hub. Not to mention that the open area of the seal will allow water/dust into the bearing.

I love your build. I wish I had the commitment to my '72 to restore it.

Cheers,

Randy

WHOA, WHOA, WHOA!!!! You are saying I have the thrust washer on backward???? The bevelled side should be facing in and riding on the inner race?????? That makes MUCH more sense

THANKS for catching that!!!!

Alex, I fixed yours AND this is a new one (those are your window trim). As I wasn't sure that there repair wouldn't distort the headliner, I decided to go with a new one. It's an ACME, of all things. I never heard of the brand… but it is nice.

I am VERY impressed with the quality of Classic Instruments build. Another good point - they sent me the wrong oil temp sender. Immediately sent me another one out. Great Company!

I lifted it in with the floor jack. The studs lined up all right. I put the parking brake on and put it in first. Then I cranked the alt and it engaged no problem.

Yep it takes about 15 minutes for the header and the seal to "self clearance" ... then you stare at it every day and realize that installing the seal the other way up would fix it ...

Hmmmm, even I think it'll be an easy job… The exhaust is clearly very good kit. I'm impressed.

After one VERY STUPID mistake that I shan't share (involving drilling out threads - 'guess I am used to Chevies) I propped up the left muff. Leveled it out with a jack stand... One hole drilled to hang it.

The other side was less straight forward - in order to achieve the same exhaust tip out… I need to hang the muff higher.

A bolt, some washers and a locking nut was the solution.

I hope to fire things up this weekend, but I am still missing a couple of fittings for the oil filter and the carbs. I can figure out a way to run it without the fittings, but hopefully the parts will get here in time. We do a BBQ on Sunday with some friends, and we fire it up. …hopefully! Note, the rear of the car has come down some and it is getting more sluggish to push back in to the garage… think it's getting heavier?

Shouldn't be a problem for a body-builder.

With the exhaust you are using, you have seemed to done away with your heater boxes ( I didn't see them ). Will you have heat in the car?

No, no, the heater cans are still on there. You can glimpse them in grey here:

Again, this is to be a near daily driver. I think heating is necessary we wouldn't want the windshield to mist up

The brand is CSP 38mm super competition… at least that is what the bills says.
