I believe the original gold banding actually had an 'L' profile. The top lip actually 'hooks' over the top surface ever so slightly if I remember correctly. The repop of several years ago was the correct width but lacked this feature as I recall.

yes the original moulding is clear plastic folded in half with foil laminated in the middle. Eric is right it has a distinct lip that sits on top of the formica.

I'll take a picture and post it

I have some larger, decent condition pieces if that would help you bubba.

Alex's repop did not have that lip.

Its amazing how something that was made 50 years ago is so hard to produce now. Bubba if you are looking to reproduce these put me at the front of the queue please. Ive looked at aluminium and anodising gold but it doesn't look right. Thanks all Neil

You know.. It's not a good design.. It's glued to the table... on the painted side of the trim peice... I'm going to have to make sure the glue we use to glue it on the table is not going to break down the gold paint on the inside of the trim... Confused

actually the glue is against the clear plastic. it is essentially a wide band of clear plastic folded in half with foil in the middle.

The reproduction trim is made this same way, but it does not have the lip formed into it that reaches over the edge of the formica, it is just a round bend.

We need enough to do two of the large main Standard Campingbox cabinets and the tables that affix to the front of them. Whoever is going to do the trim count on us for purchasing some.

I recently dissected some original pieces I have and The foil is just plain 'chrome' foil. There is no gold involved anywhere, the gold hue comes from the plastic yellowing with age? The piece I recently pulled off of one of my cabinet has slightly yellowed plastic on the back side of the moulding. I would venture to guess that when brand new the trim actually looked much more silver than gold? Either way the GOLD trim available previously, while nice looking, is way too gold.

I can post some pictures if people would like.

Also I have found a source for the same material that Alex was selling at one time, but obviously having some accurate material made would be better.

Id like to see the pics please. Could any of the early so23 interior pics shed some light on the colour? All the rest of the so23 trim is gold so i could not imagine why they would do the trim in silver. Is the secret in the colour of the plastic laminate? I think it will take a fair bit of trial and error to find the answer. Thanks Neil

Interesting.....

If the trim is silver there may be a bigger market for having some made if people want to correct their gold trim. Sure doesn't look gold in the brochure.

I know of a 38K mile SO23 that has been stored indoors all its life, original owner, and it has gold coloured trim. I think if the foil is silver then the the plastic was yellow to start with and likely becomes more yellow over time.
