Sounds like a lot of footage.. But at .15 foot.. Is still worth it... I'm down for a set to do all three tables |
I need some as well but I think if someone took on reproducing an accurate trim we would likely have people that may want to replace their "Alex" trim as well. _________________ "Love and good roads" |

No offense, but that suff that alex (so23.com) had was nothing like og, was to short and didnt stick at all well. I know its better than nothing but it would be good to raise the bar a little... |

bumping this "old gold" up again. See what I did there?
I'd love a source for repro gold trim if any exist.
Might have to resort to a custom fabrication if nothing exists. _________________ 1959 Type II Mango SO-23

Bumping this thread again. Anyone ever look into having this gold trim made? _________________ WANTED:

Opening an old can of worms here.!
Has anyone had any success in finding the right trim yet, lots have said they were going to do it so wonder if anyone has?
And its not actually gold either.
Its a silver foil between a clear plastic extrusion with a rolled top edge, and the plastic yellow's with age giving the gold effect.
Before I go too far down the road in R&D for manufacture has anyone come close to a perfect match.? |

Tony, this can of worms might be old, but it needs to be open.
I look forward to your findings and hopefully production.
In the interim, maybe someone can post up some clear and detailed photographs of the edging, as well as some measurements. I'd be happy to check for sources on the local market here in Turkey. |

I was thinking about this recently as a bit fell off the table of my 61 campingbox westy the other day.
I don't have a source, but would be interested if someone does make it.
ditto on silver aged to gold from yellowed plastic, it was not gold when new.
The box edging is half missing, this is a pic from the ad when we bought the bus.

Is anyone aware of period color photos that show this? I know it looks silver in the '60 brochure that's hand painted, but it seems inconsistent that they'd gold anodize all the SO-23 cabinet trim, bulkhead trim, breadbox hinge and go with silver elsewhere (not that VW was always "consistent" LOL). "Gold" edge banding was popular back then, and common in household decor, etc. Just curious _________________ Jack Stenner

Been a while since I looked at the edging closely but I thought that foil sandwiched in the plastic was gold on the outside silver on the inside? May be the plastic always had a yellow hue? |

Silver foil on the inside in the original piece I'm working from as the sample.
Glue on the back and you can see the discolouration of the plastic with age.

Ive seen some old photos of so23's that showed the banding looking far more silver. Ill try and find them. _________________ drive your split. |

A little bit of fuel for this topic, the very early so34s also used the same foil table banding and the anodised gold aluminium trim on the cabinets as the so23s did. Here is a colour photo pic from the early brochure; note the contrast between the silver aluminium on the rack and the subhatch trim... I think I wil refer to it as silvery/gold trim from now on
A few more pics unfortunately the colour is pretty blown out on these ones too...

Tony, can you get some measurements and a side profile photo?
It is likely that a manufacturer has something close already and with a little research, we might be able to find it.
I spent about 5 minutes looking and came up with this:
http://barbourplastics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Barbour-Plastics-Vinyl-Edge-Trim-Profiles.pdf
My guess is that profile F8299 on page 5 is pretty close and maybe they offer a metallic trim finish that would satisfy the need.
One would guess that westfalia would have used "of the shelf" products, rather than having materials custom made for a couple thousand conversions. |

To add to the flipseat brochure that Otahuhu posted above, here are some old pics from the 1970's of my August 64' flipseat. If you zoom in and look carefully at the lower right photo, the spare tire table mount is being used and it looks like the table has gold trim. Unfortunately the table top was not with the bus when I got it.
