Nah I'll just paint it with Rustoleum and Krylon - primer black right!?
JUST KIDDING!
I spent some more time today after work fixing brakes before the storms started to hit - I don't want to work in a lightning storm!
Got the passenger side front on as well as the passenger rear. Just need to replace 3 rubber lines, run the new line to the reservoir (have a spare res if needed) bleed the brakes and give her a whirl.
We're also going to double check the tranny oil and re-do the axel boots as well. Hope to have it road worthy by Friday. _________________ Ryan

A couple quick updates from this week.
I completed the hydraulic rebuild of the brakes, got them bled, and took her for a quick drive down Moson Rd. The steering has some play in it - and thats a new project for another day but overall she drove fine - got her to 45 and took her back. Next is to replace the axel boots, complete the brake adjustments, and bring her home tomorrow.
I also went through the glove box --- I found a 1990 registration tag so hasn't been sitting for 40 years - but 23 is still quite a while! Also the last service I could find having been done was in 1983. You can also see 72k on the clock in 1978. To me it looked like the PO had a fuel leak, shut it down and parked (varnished gas all over the engine compartment) in 1990. There was a good size Mesquite growing between the bumper and front apron so I am told!
Also I have a spare pair of seats in it for now from my CW- bare springs are a tad uncomfortable.

Quick note - took the beetle home today from my co-worker. Had an oil sending unit fail. Started leaking - so replaced it with another. Got the brakes adjusted - runs much better and actually drives decent. Some more work to do - but its home. _________________ Ryan

Had an interesting 2 weeks getting the beetle going under it's own power. The engine runs great. The steering is awesome! The brakes? Not so much. I replaced the master and slave cylinders, all new rubber lines, reservoir etc - but am suffering from "sticky brakes" i.e. the brakes will sometimes stick and rub a bit and heat up - which isn't good.
I did get "new" used tires for now so it's better than the old bias play 30+ year old tires. Took her out and snapped a few pics at sunset.
Enjoy!

Nice Southern Arizona sunnset. Golly you will have the brakes sorted out. Myabe drive that up to Jerome and show it off. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

Where are all these original paint beryl bugs suddenly coming from? Why does Boise only have red? _________________

For those of you still curious - I still have her. She is under cover and under my care. Nice weekend trips once in a while. I'm amazed at the amount of attention from NON VW folks I get. Then again - she's 53 now. Not young by car standards.
No current pics - looks the same though. Maybe new pics / video soon. _________________ Ryan

Say drive on up to the Bug O Rama in March. Would like to see the vehicle in person. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

Just found this thread, cool 63. Nice find. I live in AZ also. You going to bug-o-Rama? Think all the samba members that go should meet up. _________________ Early 1964 1835cc, single Dellorto 40 carb. Freeway flyer transaxle from Don's bus box. Hi this little gem now lives in Vancouver Canada, No it will never be painted!
First up is a complete interior restoration, THe original square weave carpet color being inpossible to find... that makes things interesting ... will slowly work on the mechanicals over the winter.
Perhaps I will update this thread from time to time.

Did anybody ask about the Economotors license plate frame? Is that where the car was originally purchased? _________________ If you`re going to do something, do it right. |
