|
|
This is an FYI - cleared with Everett, but he can tell me he changed his mind!
So, FYI, I am part of an effort to create a modern, 3-piece modular, 18" Phone Dial wheel! The 3-piece modular design will provide more fitment flexibility (we welcome your feedback on the available sizes). And the 18 inch wheel size will make available the variety of current tire sizes available.
The effort is headed up by a fellow Porsche 928 nut, Jim Doerr (I helped him some with the design). We are now wrapping up the design stages, and need to do the SAE testing on actual wheels to document their strength for the DOT. For this stage, Jim has created a Kickstarter fund raiser, where you can support this part of the effort in various ways (it is a grass roots effort!) while getting Phone Dial related goodies. However, you can also actually pre-order one of the initial wheelsets! A fair warning that they are not cheap - but they will be quality wheels made by a respected North American wheel manufacturer.
If you are a fan of the Phone Dial wheels, check out the details at Kickstarter (search on "Phone Dial"). Being a VW fan myself, I would love to see a set of these on a VW!

Thanks for reaching out, Carlos!
Carlos is the chief designer on the project, so feel free to ask him any questions you may have.
I'll post up more info on the project in the vendor classifieds.
Kind regards,

You called me out! Jim looks at it that way, but it was a very collaborative effort - I could not have done it without Jim's awesome CAD skills.
Yes, ask away. It was an enjoyable and challenging project. Keep in mind that the Porsche PCD stayed the same, while the rest of the wheel scaled up from 16 to 18 inch size and proportions. Also, the modular rim being used has a different look from what the Porsche rims look like on the stockers. Balancing these things (and much more) was the challenge, as we retained the "essence" of the Phone Dial wheel.
That essence - those unique sumptuous curves - can be a whole topic in itself! There were also many subtle variations of stocker Phone Dials to consider, from the 911 through the 928, all with their own differences, yet all recognized by folks as Porsche "Phone Dial" wheels.
I am rambling, but suffice it to say, we learned a lot along the way.

I've seen the CAD data on this and a full prototype, and can fully attest that Jim knows what he is doing. Is Off Topic the only place you can discuss this? Not as much traffic here.
Also, Rule #1: NEED PICS!! |

Hate to say it but back to the drawing board because those wheels look nothing like how I dial my phone.

Wish I had a shot of them on a Beetle...

See the Kickstarter link in Jim's signature for pricing of the first wheel sets and other goodies.
No Tampa discount, unfortunately, but you can have the opportunity to see the Alpha Prototype in person when it arrives for final design reviews |

The Alpha Prototype (as seen mounted on Jim's Pearl White late model 928*) will be making its rounds as we do our final design reviews.
Anyone willing to loan their beetle for test mounting? Preferably in the Richmond, Virginia area (Jim Doerr), but Tampa, FL and Irvine, CA will be part of that design tour as well.
* Jim mounted the Alpha Prototype wheel on the front of his 928, then using a tripod, took a pic, quickly dismounted it and remounted it on the rear, took another pic - then spliced the pics together so we could see how they looked on a late model 928- we are pleased!

Thank you 10mm - agree!

By the rules, we (those involved in the project) can bring it up here in Off Topic and Jim has also created an Ad in the Samba Classifieds under "Vendors - New Parts" -> Accessories.
Anyone else can probably bring up this thread in the appropriate context (and maybe link to this thread).
We do want the word to get out - we want these 18 inch versions to become a reality for all who appreciate the Phone Dial wheel as we do, and I think a set would look very cool on any car that currently can sport the 16 inch versions. Still looking for VW volunteers (Bug, Karmann Ghia, Bus?) in the Richmond, Virginia, Tampa, Florida, or Irvine, California areas for some photo opportunities!

That is actually a very nice looking Pacer (yes, I said that).
However, I think it would just be "wrong" to put Phone Dial 18's on it!

The Isuzu wheels make me think of waffles.
Just curious, but are there trademark/copyright issues with redoing the wheels? |

No trademark, copyright, patent concerns to report.
I've trademarked 'Phone Dial'
Thanks for asking!

Bump for two weeks to go!
Success in the Kickstart effort is a major step in getting these wheels manufactured. Once manufactured, the tooling and programming will have been set up, making these wheels available for current and future enthusiasts!
Help us make that happen, and get a cool reward in return: Poster, T-shirt, Euro License Plate, Diecast 928, even a Set of Wheels!
Thank you for your support thus far! _________________ Carlos Hernandez

Bump for being a lot closer to the goal, and getting closer to the August final date.
No VW volunteers to fit these in a photo shoot?
Anyone want different rewards or combinations of rewards? I suggested to Jim that he needed more different combinations of rewards.
Thank you for the support thus far! _________________ Carlos Hernandez
