Hi my name is Earl and Ive been looking on here a while to get some ideas about what style build I wanted to do.I have 3 other friends who are also building buggys at the same time and were looking to be finished for next spring so we can all go driving together. One guy has an original Manx and is going Retro ,the 2nd is a mild custom ,and the third is a mid engine rotary powered rocket with a very innovative chassis, cage and suspension. So after I took a look at Nicks mid engine monster I decided I like its style but to much work for me so I came up with some ideas of my own and borrowed some of his.Im going to use a 13b mazda rotary tied to a 002 bus trans using an adapter I built from 3/4 aluminum plate copied off of a kennedy adapter. The adapter also doubles as a motor/trans mount.I started on june 20 and have done ok so far but will slow way down now because of work out of town, but when I get back will be fabricating the rear hubs/uprights and all the control arms, and inboard push rod style shocks. So take a look and give me some comments good bad or otherwise thanks Earl.

Have you had a chance to mock in the seats? Just wondering if the downward 'V' of the wind screen frame will impair your vision.

Other than that, I think this is amazing. My next one will be more like this...in about 20 years. Cool

I have been thinking of building another buggy (I built a Coyote bodied tube frame buggy back in the early eighties). I love the direction you are taking with this build. I'll be watching your progress with great interest.

Nice build so far, Earl - but you might consider changing the top cross tube at 'windshield' to a straight piece. In the untimely event of a rollover, the 'pre-bent' top bar makes me concerned that it could collapse.

Really good looking welds and overall excellent work! If I build another buggy I want to do it exactly like what you do.

Are you using any particular software for suspension geometry? What kind of shock absorbers are you planning on using?

Well heres sundays update not much but wanted to hang with my kids so only worked a couple hours on it. first I didn't use any computer programs for the suspension design for one I suck more on a computer than I do with a camera, and Ive built a few cars from ground up and have a little bit of a idea of what works . Will it be the optimum suspension design ,no but for what kind of driving I will do itll be fine.I ve done a about 30 years of ametur chassis building and built cars back in the early 80s before there were programs for design.Part of my biggest slow down so far was finding front wheels that I liked with enough backspacing(or offset for you euro guys)so I could get the scrub radius as small as possible and still have desent turning radius. And as far as the front bar of the cage goes I think it will be ok also as Ive used this design on a few rock buggys and my Polaris razors all of which have been rolled many times with no damage.I feel the weakest part of my design and most others is where the A pillar ties to the floor pan,as your tieing to a flat plane with no vertical bracing or nodes to triangulate anything. So that's it for tonight im going to see if my 12 year old son will post this for me cause I don't have a clue and it just toke me 20 minutes to type this thanks for the replys and keep them coming Earl.

Just a qwik update I finished one side of the rear a arms Im happy how it looks so far so hopefully this weekend I can finish the other side and start on the inboard shocks and linkage.and in case any one is wondering why the bolts are so long its because I like to keep the shank of the bolt in the 'shear plane 'so these will be cut down after mock up and use nyloc nuts.

STELLAR build. Love the chassis work. The only thing I wonder about is why you mounted the inner rod ends on the rear suspension on the horizontal plain instead of vertically??? It's going to severely limit your suspension movement. Other than that 2 thumbs and 2 big toes up!!!!!!

...me too Brad. The heim joints look crossed up to me?

But I couldn't have tacked this together like like Iron Worker has .. if I owned Lincoln Electric.

I noticed the same thing. How is that going to function correctly?

the heims in the horz position use misalignment bushings which allow much greater movement.I checked today and they are at about 13 degrees in both direction for a total of 26 degrees. I toke off the wheel and checked the travel at just over 8 inchs total which is about 4 inches more than I need.I commonly use this type setup because it allows the weld for your mounting bracket to be along the longitudal plane of the tube and not 90 degrees to the tube which causes a weakspot welding around half the tube vs with the direction of the tube. This is common practice with many road race cars.I will also be tack welding these bushings to the mounting tabs as Ive learned that when the chassis comes back from powdercoating it adds thickness to the tabs and the heims don't fit ,so this way I can just take a file and clean off the powdercoat from on top of the bushings for a perfect fit.If you goggle 'heim high misalignment bushings 'I would think you could find a picture of them.thanks Earl

Ironworker:

Nice work thus far! Question: did you make your own threaded weld spuds or buy them? Source & size?
