Pretty harsh...
He did infact change the priority on the front-end from disc (for safety concerns) to lower stance.
But from what I read,he didn't feel the quality of the work was up to snuff.
Hard to blame him, considering the fenders and the partial front-clip were cheap replacement sheetmetal, door-sag was obvious and the brakes apparently didn't feel that good.
Don't think for ONE second that Dan or the insurance company was doing the kid a "favor"!
As was mentioned before...the kid should have allowed the insurance company to total the car.
(Then he should have bought it back from his insurance company!) _________________ Defying conventional wisdom since 1970 |

Sorry this is late but I finally just saw the episode
Is it me or was that kid an arse-hole(or seemed to be). I know the show is edited but he seemed way off base and should have thanked his lucky stars his insurance company even paid for repairs rather than totaling it out. I know there was a lot of off screen back n forth but when he picked the car up and complained about the brakes and his attitude I was like WTF! Its not a 2013 Merecedes dude, plus its drum brakes! Kid told him to put disc brakes on after he was told that particular shop could not keep his drop (even though we all know how to add disc brakes with drop) then the kid wines….the stance is gone wa wa wa.
If you are on here Todd please fill me in. I know it was edited but it was done so either quite honestly or it was done to put you in an unfavorable light. Like to know…. Im local to Fantomworks and he seemed to want to help you since you were a service member.
I know the labor is inflated…but ...IMO the kid seemed to not understand the prices auto repairs with labor. I think he thought $8000 was going to go along way(we know the drill when it comes to money and insurance)…..labor dude….people value their time and have to eat and pay the shop bills.
He should have taken the check from Insurance co. and fixed it himself.
Whats everyones else's opinions out there? _________________ In the wild, health care is, Ow, I hurt my leg. I can't run. A lion eats me. I'm dead. |

Very late for the party.Resurrecting the thread only because I just saw this episode. $8000 can buy a pretty nice '66 IMHO. But $8000 for a new beam (not even a German beam as it had the red urethane bushings), chinese fender and apron, pull some dents and respray the front end? I don't know what this shop charges in the real, non-tv world but I can't see anyone staying in business charging that kind of money. Some guy brings in a TR6, they buff the paint (but in reality if you look at the "before" pics they just brushed some shit on it to make it look old), freshen up the engine, install interior and top. Final bill was $50,000+ ?????
The Camaro they built for the owner's wife. Is that really the cleanest '68 they could find? Really? And the flames on the hood looked like ass.
I like most of these shows but I think Graveyard Carz and Bitchin' Rides are the best of what's out there. More about cars than drama. Stopped watching Counting Cars because I can't stand Horny Mike or the overly scripted BS. _________________

Resurrecting the thread because there is a Fantomworks marathon on right now. I like watching the car repairs, but I hate how it seems like every single project goes way over budget. He always waits until the car is torn completely apart, or he's completely finished with the repair before giving them new charges they never expected. Sometimes you can tell the owners are reeling from it, but they know they're on camera. It's hard to watch. _________________ Have nice 914, want nice Bug |

A better name for this particular show would be fantasy works. All bullshit, totally scripted. The formula is same for all of them, go over budget, find hidden flaws and work until last minute getting the car ready which always takes just a few days. Have you ever seen anyone do a restoration in a matter of days or weeks? Realize they are for entertainment purposes only, laugh at the bullshit. I've seen them all my fav would be wheeler dealers but its got its fair share of bs too. |

Agree....Ed China seems to be the real deal and knows his stuff. Plus, he "cut his teeth" on ACVW's. _________________ '65 Sunroof Bug |

You want to see a really bad car show watch desert car kings. Painting over rust and unfinished fiberglass patch repairs. Then they sell them at auction. _________________ Schrodinger's cat walked into a bar and it didn't.

All those car shows got little quirks but the one that absolutely hacks is redneck garage. I mean gas monkey . Story line goes like this. Take a nice numbers matching car. Discard the engine, lower it and bag it, install huge wheels, set it up to do burn outs and there it is. Original numbers matching cars are getting harder to find. They are only original once folks. |

My favorite car show is wheeler dealer with the two british dudes, some of their finished work isnt to my taste but I like how they show the actual work they do. My least favorite is the show with the dude who wears stupid glasses and his father gave him a junkyard business. I dont like the guy all he does is complain and acts like he is a miracle worker. _________________ 71 Super beetle |

I agree with a number of the posters here. In general, these show are all attempts to gain viewers by creating false urgencies. Gotta get the car done in 3 weeks...!!! If it were my car and my money, my advice to the builder would be "Take your time and do it right".
All that said, the top two car shows IMO are Bitchin Rides and Wheeler Dealers. I like Bitchin Rides because the car builds are pretty cool and they don't seem to be "clock watching" and rushing to get the job done. I like Wheeler Dealers because, although the quality of some of the work is not what I would want, Edd China knows his stuff and keeps the drama to a minimum. I like both shows because the key people - Dave Kindig and Edd China are also VW guys.
Fantom Works is a horrible show and I grow tired of watching Dan talking in a sweaty shirt and chastising the clients. He always seems to get the customer backed into a corner with the hours and cost to do their restorations and in all honesty, many of the finished products they produce are less than high quality.
The bug show on Fantom Works was a joke. The client acted like a jerk, but Dan's effort of providing good customer service was just plan awful. l _________________ 1967 Beetle
