Engine Letter Code
It looks like it has an SM stamp? Anybody know about this...
So does this make it an Oct 1962 engine, and a 40hp. instead of a 36hp.?

It's actually November 62... the charts from that era list the final unit built that month. Your engine still has it's early-63-only stale air 40HP fan shroud as well! But other things... that's a later 65 fuel cutoff vavle, the distributor drive gear must in in wrong because the distributor is not in the right spot. It's got a later carb or carb top on it, with the later choke. Whats with the oil filler cap? _________________ My 1960 Ragtop bug build

My new bug is missing a few parts here and there.
I have been trying to find a gear shift knob that I like. I'm trying to keep it sort of period correct and had thought about just buying a new one, also thought about making one out of a billiards ball, maybe even out of one of those kids size pool table sets with the smaller billiards balls. Then I came across this build that "dschup" is working on...

I just made a shift knob. I used the core of a stock knob for the threads. Then I dremmeled out one of my grandfathers old pipe bowls and added a 1962 German mark. What do ya think? I may add some black to the coin and then rub it so the eagle and lettering stand out.
I still have to add a gloss coat and glue a few things. (And match the color of the e-brake - small hammer handle).

I really like it! So, I got to looking around and found all of the parts "in house". I came across some Deutsche Marks that I have had since I was a kid living in Stuttgart in '74 during my Dad's second tour to Germany. Just happened to have a 1959 Mark. That's pretty period correct... I hope "dschup" doesn't mind me being a copycat.
I'm never going to finish this car if I keep this sort of thing up, but, I'm having a lot of fun! _________________ My 1960 Ragtop bug build

No worries, The pipe bowl idea turned out really well. The one I used was from a partially metal (Falcon I think) pipe, so the bowl was already round.
Go for it!
Finished knob

I acquired a pre-owned HF sand blasting cabinet from a friend who was disgusted with it. I was going to just clean it up a bit and try it out. Two hours later I was in the middle of a complete disassembly of the unit.
After two days of trail and error (several trips to the hardware store later) I have a very efficient little sandblasting cabinet. All seams silicone caulked, plumbed to a 30 gallon water tank made into a media filter containing a 2 1/4" PVC straw with a 45 degree cut going all the way to the bottom and the outlet hole even with the lid. It has about 8 inches of water in the bottom. All of this is hooked to a 6 hp shop vac. It really rocks and rolls when its turned on, it captures almost all of the media, keeping the shop vac filter from getting clogged up.

First parts to go through sandblast, prime and paint. It's not much progress, but, it's a start!
I used Rust-oleum:
- self etching primer
- ultimate finish fast drying wet sandable primer
- 7715 Aluminum

[quote="Jack Frisch"]I restored my headlights yesterday and found a perfect match for the color that needed to be repainted on the inside of the lights.
My headlight assemblies are original and have never been painted, so the color thats there was correct
That color is a aluminum color.
I matched it on the first try using:
Rustoleum's "Aluminum 7715" spray paint
Make sure the can has Aluminum 7715 on its barcode sticker.
You will be very happy with this paint. |

I got all of the glass out prior to removing the body, except for the doors...
Pretty straight forward until I got to the wing windows, this was very slow, but better than pulling out the drill...

Next on the list was to hook up and drag her down to "The Bug Stop" to have the engine pulled out and rebuilt. Estimated turn-a-round is potentially six months, which is o.k. with me, I'll have plenty of time to get the pan ready.
It's like dropping your kid off at day-care, it looks like he'll make some friends here.

= a year and a half
Nice work on the detailed pics. Wish that kind of patina could be done on my car without having to wait half a decade! (and no, I refuse to go with fauxtina)... _________________ .

Before, during, and after...
Progress is one step forward and two backwards - no engine, it is getting much lighter and easier to push in and out of the garage.
