|
|
hi all, few month ago i started my resto project. I never did before, so i was "like a virgin" .... expecially in metal works and rust treatment...
I bought a mig welder, made some test and started work on the back side of my 1964 T1 panel.
Back side was orribly rusted on roof gutter joint all long right side, top member up on rear hatch was almost vanished, rear hatch hinges was bent and stratched..... so my T1 was a challanging resto project i suppose.
i took some picture before works started and some while works progress going on till now for a total of 3 month.
here you find some picture i uploaded:

Wow, that IS a project. We all forget how fortunate we are living in countries where Splits were made or imported en masse. Keep those pics coming, eh? _________________ Cheers & God Bless

The whole thing was all there just waiting to be re-atomized. Funny how easily they cut them up back then."

i'll do my best to keep up to date my progress, i added some photo on picasa album https://picasaweb.google.com/pbattia/RestoT1VWPanel1964
after roof priming (epoxy zinc primer) and cargo panel removal.
in the photo below
i show how i used acids (HCL Hydroclordric acid or Muriatic Acid 5% and Phosphoric Acid 30%) to fight RUST!!!
just my experience.. maybe can be useful to someone else.
the panel was depply rusted, so after the first grinding (using drill with 40 grit disk) i applied for 2 days HCL 5%. I used 1/2 lt sprying and brushing it many times in order to not let it dry .... of course i did and left unattended for 1hour or so and then did again and again...
It's not an hard job just wear gloves and glasses obviously and work in open/ventilated area
At every time you brush and spray fresh HCL acid you will see how rust is getting consumed and bare metal will appear below.
at the end of afternoon i rinced with water and some soap and dryied immediatly.
In 10-15 minutes you will se your panel covered by a new thin red/brown film, just new superficial oxydation, nothing to worry too much.
At this point where some rust is still present is really thin so you can apply Phosphoric Acid (the base of most branded converter).
In a couple of hour it will convert your rust (max thikness 0,5 mm) into a black and stable material that can be directly painted or removed (better in my opinion where and if possible).
Of course best is give a wash before priming or removing.
HCL in concentration till 10-15% do not react with bare metal or if it does it'is very very slow and do not compromise your panel. It's important to wash it and neutralize (soap) HCL.
Phosphoric acid does not need neutralization because on bare metal as any effect... you can leave it till when you don't have to paint.

Great work dude. You are a brave man. I like the way you are dealing with the gutters as it is a job i still have to do on my panel. It's watching restorations online that motivates us all to try and get on with the job ourselves. So thanks for posting.
She is bad but she will rise again, i wish you good luck and keep posting those updates.
Feel free to check out my panel. It will cheer you up I promise

this week-end many progress... B pillar cutted away and prepared his replacement..... and ...... at the end...
full ventilation opened!!!!!
So, front valence to be replaced as waited but most important any surprising bad news from A pillars... has to be patched but can be saved from lower hinges down....
now i have to start to look for a left front door .. mine is bad, not so much rusty but deeply dented and hinges are gone.. they was badly welded on door side and are difficoult to repair...
i up-dated on picasa album many photo for who is intrested in.
