Maybe a Mini Mercedes? Scooby223 is building one, and it looks a lot like his. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=516085

Every time my brother would get a new puppy, he would give it a name having to do with where it came from...Newman came from the Newman Lake area. Anyways, I got this buggy delivered to me from Eugene Oregon. Being that i used to live there, and the buggy came from there, it only made sense to name it Eugene. _________________ 62/70 Dune Runner Mini Mercedes "Eugene"

So how do I find out more about the dune runner mini mercedes makers? Like how many where made and who actually made them? I've never owned a buggy and for some reason I feel like I want to know more about them. Thanks. _________________ 62/70 Dune Runner Mini Mercedes "Eugene"

I also have one that is in the process of repair
Mine is a short wheel base and was pretty broken up , taking a lot of fiberglass work to fix . Someone drilled wholes every where and cut most of the rear tail off . But I got it cheap so can't complain too much and the training I'm getting on fiberglass repair worth the effort
The big mistake is I have not taken enough picture

From the research I have done the company was called Road runner and then got sued by Warner bros. and had to change the name to dune runner. they made 3 different hoods and 3 different body styles all interchangeable hoods with bodies. They made a short body 80" wheel base, a full size body and a pick up body, I had a pick up body that was cut in half. I have not seen any kind of numbers on how many of them were made, however I can tell there are a lot more of our hood style than the other two styles made.
this is the brochure i found
I was told by an old timer at a show once that our style hood was designed so that a huge gas tank could be used for off road racing whether there is any truth to that I am not sure but I do know a full size 67 and earlier tank will fit with out modification. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=516085

Did they all have the same engine? The guy says mine is a type 3 motor, but I have yet to locate and look up the number on the engine. _________________ 62/70 Dune Runner Mini Mercedes "Eugene"

that I know of this company only made bodies and some accessories they weren't an auto manufacturer. Mine was titled as a 1969 and had a 1958 beetle frame and a 1973 California emissions approved engine when I got it. I am using a 1972 beetle frame now for the IRS and Ball Joint upgrades. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=516085

Gotcha! Seems like a few that I have seen so far has that type 3 motor in them. I appreciate your insight and enjoy seeing pics of your buggy. I look forward to many years of enjoyment out of this thing. _________________ 62/70 Dune Runner Mini Mercedes "Eugene"

So what is the plan get it running and drive, or rebuild? When I started looking for a buggy I saw a lot that I said if I would of done it I would of done it like this, so I decided to start from scratch and do it how I wanted right or wrong how I wanted. And so far I know every bolt and nut on it some of them 2 or 3 times... _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=516085

Well it runs real good. For now, I am just going to spiff up the looks a bit. I have started sanding the body with wet/dry. The old paint comes off pretty easy and the purple gelcoat underneath looks pretty decent. I am going to be fabricating a back seat for it. Being that I am doing that, I am thinking about a whole new roll cage setup, bu t that's going to take a few bucks. New tires prob next spring. I guess for the time being, I am going to just enjoy it. I like the idea of a newer pan being that mine is a 60, so that's something for me to keep in mind for the future. I am sure it won't be too long before I will have turned every bolt on this myself. I will keep taking and posting pics as things happen. _________________ 62/70 Dune Runner Mini Mercedes "Eugene"

Well I know lots of people ask the question as to what seat replacement is best, I got these from the junkyard for less than $20, out of a Chevy Cavalier. Fits good, feels great. Bolted them right to the floor. Swapped driver and passenger sides for ease of reaching the handle to lay the seat back.

Exactly the same seats I used for my buggy 9 years ago. They are comfortable and have lasted very well.
Still going strong.

So, one of my headlights went bobbleheading the other day. After reading about repair in the forum, I've determined I need to glass a washer in underneath and reinstall headlight. I see that repair without the washer has already been done to this car in the past, is that the path I should follow with this repair

When I redid my body I glassed in a large washer from underside... Several layers of resin mat for strength/body.... Once cured I stuffed as much mat and resin I could into hole from topside and built it up to form a dome and then drilled new hole to support light...

Ok, distributor question time. Finally deciding to tackle what I think is a distributor in the wrong position and looking for help. I have included 3 pics, stock 1600 type 3 motor, notch in distributor is at 7 o clock, plastic straw in cylinder number 1 is all the way down, and 3rd pic is of timing mark, which I think is 180° off. I've been able to adjust valves and timing to run decent, but I know its time to correct this. I have read plenty in the forums, but haven't found exactly my problem yet. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

It could very will be 180* off but as long as the plug wires on the cap go to the corresponding cylinders it will not make any difference. They obviously do go to the correct plugs or it would not run. The stock distributor is in a different position on the type 3 compared to the Beetle anyway.
It looks to me like someone has been doing some creative parts mixing and matching. That distributor does not appear to have a vacuum advance pot so is not from a type 3 engine. I see the engine is a late type 3 that originally had fuel injection. The injector holes are blocked off and someone must have rigged on a carb to the injection manifold in the center?
Pictures of the carb please. |
