At the gas station filling up:

"Is that a V8?"

Hard not to laugh at the guy.

I've been asked "is it fast?" more often than anything else. Even with my license plate they still ask Cool

I guess the funniest question I have been asked was at a gas station as I was filling up:
"Is that a Maserati?

I had a drunk dude outside a bar one night proclaim loudly, "Dude, an MG Midget! I haven't seen one of those in forever!" Rolling Eyes

Blew off a Jag XKE from a 40 MPH roll up to about a hundred. I knew the guy (lawyer dude with driving gloves) so we stopped and he swore I had a Porsche engine. I said no a Porsche engine would cost a lot more and not be as fast- you just got owned by a VW. He still doesn't believe it.

Last weekend at one of the shows, I won a door prize in a drawing, K Molenda with a 1974 karmann Ghia. They tried to shield the mike, but the gal who literally sat in back of the car all day, says "what the f@ck is a Karmann Ghia?" As I accepted my prize, she says , what kind of car is that? To which I reply, "it's not a car, its's a Volkwagen."
This weekend a kid slugs his dad in the arm and yells slug bug, the dad looks at the kid, looks at my car, that's not slugbug you dipsh1t, that's a MG, then smacks the kid in the back of the head and walks on... Pretty funny stuff..

Most people who see mine in a pub car park don't have a clue what it is even after they've read the script on the decklid. They then walk around the front to look at the badge...they're usually surprised.

at gas stations: "Is it for sale, can I buy it from you (what's it worth, what did you pay for it)?"
:fist:
my answer so far has always been: "More than you're willing to pay for it."

Ghias were once quite common in California, so most people over the age of 35 know what it is. Last week, several early 20s guys were checking out my car and one of them said to me, "Dude, that is a shag mobile!" Laughing

I was once asked, "isn't that the same car they used in the movie COBRA?" Shocked

I had a neighbor once ask me if they still make them. It was hard to reply with "no, not since 1974".

When I was towing the bear metal body and pan to the body shop I had a guy insist "that is a nice Porsche!". He was so exited I just replied thanks... Confused

Haha, I had something similar happen to me too. It was a older woman parking attendant in the booth as I was leaving a parking deck...she said, "Is that a Porsche?"
I said, "No it's a Volkswagen."
She said, "Are you sure it's not a Porsche?"
I replied, "I'm pretty sure."
She didn't looked convinced.

Also, I just remembered this one. I've got the mid 60's tank in my 74, so I have to lift up the front trunk lid to fill up. I had a guy at a gas station walk up to me with a concerned look and ask why I was putting gas into my radiator. He seemed completely baffled by the notion of a rear engine car!

Had at least 5 people come up and ask "Do you drive it?" yesterday.

We were at Redskins Rides, on the Washington Redskins training field. Someone suggested there was about $25 million worth of new cars out there. Might have been an underestimate. Lots of car trailers out front. Maybe those Maserati's and Bugatti's don't get driven much... Or, maybe it was the shiny '57 Chevy's and muscle cars that came in the trailers...

But, VW's are meant to be driven and enjoyed... (A trailer queen she ain't.)

We've also had the "Nice Porsche!" comment, starting from the first day we got her. Better than yesterday's "I had a Corvair just like that one!".

"Is that a real car?"

I think she meant as opposed to some fibreglass kit car, but it still made me laugh.

Mine wasn't really a question but a response, from an 8 year old kid literally hanging out the back of his parents SUV yelling "that is a cool car! Cool car man!" With the rock on hand signs... etc. etc.. over and over again.

There is hope for our youth.
