If it has the floppy style throw out bearing it is a 69-70. If it has the guide tube sleeve for the throw out bearing it is a 71-72. They both have the same gears inside. 4.12 R&P with 3.80/2.06/1.26/.89 gears _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

You wouldn't happen to know the gears in a 1968 type 1, would you? _________________ Good things come to those who wait.

67-68 swingaxle had the same R&P and gears as the 69-72 IRS. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

vwracerdave. I have a '67 and thought the R&P was 4.375 based on an earlier test of (I have forgotten exactly how to do.) jacking one rear wheel off the ground and rotating other tire in 2nd gear or something like that. Can anyone give me the exact procedure? Now I'm not sure if I have a 4.375 or a 4.12 R&P.
Thanks, Marvin |

Typically 67-72 ran 4.12 r/p. Almost all were 3.8,2.06,1.26,.89 stacks. Late 71 and 72 had fine tooth gears on 3-4 _________________ There are no stupid questions, only stupid people,

so how exactly can i tell which ratio transmission i have?
A way to determine your gearing is to jack up the rear of the car so that both rear tires are off the ground. E-brake off, shifter in 2nd gear. Turn one tire so the valve stem is at the top. Now turn the engine over by hand, counting engine turns needed to get one turn of the tire.
9 turns = 4.37
8½ turns = 4.12
8 turns = 3.88 |

Not all are G types. When VW ran out of Gs, they substituted Ks. I know a guy who found a K type 4.12 inside the original untouched gearbox from a 1970. _________________

From the factory, they had the 17 tooth ones with the round shoulders. |

That one's kind of a hybrid of the design of the late 15 tooth gear that uses the paddle to shift it, but has 17 teeth instead. This is more like what would have come in an AH trans.

There is a style with a couple little lines cut into the edges of the teeth, and one without lines. You need to have a match to what you're replacing, or mating up to the slider being used. |

The overwhelming majority had a 17 tooth reverse idler. But a rare number had 15 tooth idlers. _________________

my 73 box had the 15 and the 74 year box had the 17.both 388,one K one G. one .87 4th 1 was.93 the 73 year was ssc and the 74 date code was duel side cover. I think vw was just having fun building and grabing whatever they wanted to stick togeather that day for whatever model car they were building for. and when somebody has been in it you just never know what you might find. if you have to have the right one for a "quick" job...better get both gears...and the reverse gears on the input shaft can be diferent too that one threw me fer a loop for a little bit.and the other reverse gear too...there sure is a lot of reverse gears&stuff in these trans... |

What you had was a gearbox assembled by someone that was NOT VW.
If this trans was IRS, it started out from VW as a swing axle. _________________

When a car company is manufacturing 4000 cars per day, there's no such thing as "using up old stock".
Unless you have direct knowledge of the entire history of that gearbox, you're just guessing. Transmissions get rebuilt to a different configuration every day by the large trans builders. Yesterday I was getting started on two gearboxes for a 64 and a 66 swing axle Bus. Both gearbox codes said Type 3 IRS! _________________
