I'll probably be able to sell these after we finalize the design and test them. But you're welcome to duplicate what you see .. _________________ aka Pablo, Geary

I'm in. I wouldn't have any idea where to buy the bits to build them. _________________ '82 SyncroWesty, the first ever conversion.'06 Subaru 2.5L |

Thanks for the great pics and write up. This is one of my favorite threads.
I am curious why you moved the oil draw fitting from the drivers side to the passenger? I am currently placing this same fitting and the driver side spot for the fitting is flat where as the passenger side is not. I see you welded a bung on the pass side to flatten it out. Was this a performance design or better hose routing maybe?
I think either side of the bell housing is the best spot since it wont draw out all the oil. Seeing yours installed reminds me of the temp sender I had on the the other lower side of the cv flange that got broken off when the side gear shaft sheared off and the flange and 930cv made contact with the sender. I would hate for that to happen to the oil draw fitting.
3rd post down http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5...p;start=60
In a previous page of this thread you mention that you moved the location of the low gear housing oil return fitting to clear the gas tank. Is the picture below, before or after you moved the fitting? I assumed you used the same surface just slightly different location.

On my bellhousing (shown a couple pages back), the flat is on the passenger side .. the perfect spot for an oil outlet.
The G gear housing inlet shown has since been moved rearward a tad, and trimmed to be slightly lower profile. Removing a small area of the thick fuel tank padding allows it to clear. _________________ aka Pablo, Geary

I moved the input port for the external pump to the passenger side because that is the side the pinion bearing oil feed fitting is located. The banjo fitting on top of the gear case pictured is the early location that is no longer used, the fitting was moved closer to the mating face that is towards the bellhousing. When I initially did the modifications, my Syncro conversion wasn't far enough along to the point of having the fuel tank mounted.....Paul being much wiser than I am made the comment that there was very limited space above the trans at the location of the fitting and he was right! The moving of the fitting requires one to take great care when TIG welding the new fitting into the case as it is closer to the mating surface of the Housing and warpage from welding can cause localized shrinkage of the mating surface 0.003-0.005" not a lot but possibly enough to cause a leak _________________ I'm Cheap! Gents,
Are the newly used inlet and outlets also used for 2wd transmissions or are there differences needing alternative locations? |

The 2wd mainshaft bearing is in the same location as a syncro but obviously there is not a low gear housing on the 2wd for the oil return. I don't have a 2wd tranny to look at but if you look at pg 35.36 of the bentley, the gear carrier cover looks like it has an empty channel next to the main shaft bearing that could be used much like it is on the syncro.
Apparently, the bell housings may have a flat spot on either side for the oil pump feed fitting. _________________ Syncronize it!

This thing! What's the verdict on this ring, include? Omit?
The ring/shield between the main bearing and 4th gear! (Pictured above is the one gears cut up, mine was in working order)
I hemmed and hawed about putting it back in, like I found it, or omitting it because it seemed like it would just jingle around in there.
Impulsively, I put it back in "leave it like you found it" and now, I can hear it in there. Is it going to block oil from hitting the main bearing? Or is it beneficial?
Bentley doesn't show it, but it was in there. |

Looking for input about a thermo switch for the transmission oil pump. Weddle sells one that comes on at 150 degrees F, the only issue I have with it is that it requires drilling a 3/4" hole in my transmission. It looks like jonslider is using the weddle thermo switch. I would prefer something closer to 1/8" but the only ones I have seen are radiator fan switches that come on at 180 degrees. That is too hot in my opinion to turn on the oil pump. The other option is a manually operated switch but the driver must remember to turn it on at appropriate temperature.
1. Anyone know about a thermo switch that comes on around 150 or lower with 1/8" npt fittings?
2. Should I just use a manual switch?
3. Should I get the switch weddle sells?
4. What do gears and zeohsix plan to use? Could you please give us some details about the external components you are using for transmission oiling (ie pump, filter, cooler, switches, hoses etc.)
Here is a link to a weddle document for their oil circulation system:
http://www.weddleindustries.com/sites/weddleindustries.com/files/tech-info/CS-INST_0.pdf
I already bought the gear driven pump, filter, and cooler from weddle but I am sure there are other options.
Thanks for sharing your information with the syncro community. Pics from my circulation system will be posted soon when I finish it. _________________ Syncronize it!

I didn't look very long, but I did find this little guy - http://www.vdo-instruments.com/sensors/temperature...0x1-5.html
You would have to spot face the case to allow for a copper seal washer, but that is pretty simple. _________________ "Sometimes you have to build a box to think outside of." - Bruce (not Springsteen)

David, here's a good quality inexpensive electronic controller with adjustable temp setting (~150-240ºF) for automatic control, manual override input wire, removable relay, 25A capacity and good heavy-duty detachable fused wire harness.
This is the kit I use with my Syncro oil cooler kits, it has an unthreaded remote temp probe for insertion between heat exchanger fins:

whereas this one is the same thing with a 3/8" MPT threaded probe, which would be perfect for your use:

The Derale products are pretty good stuff, impressive quality at low price. _________________ Shop for unique Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:
