So having helped my Son get his 1958 Bug on the road to complete the Treffen 15 this year. He goes out last week and surprises me with this. A 1974 Standard Beetle.

My son Dan is only 18, works full time and full time college , but he researched the cars for sale, saved up a few bucks and went to see this 74 standard. The money exchanged hands, and he and his friend loaded this baby up and brings it home to Dad (tears in my eye when it arrived)

After the initial shock, I decided, I'd start my own thread on the beloved car he bought home for me.

Here's what it looked like when it arrived last Sunday:

Here's my 74 parked next to my son's 58:

First task was to strip the interior.

The pans are shot, so they need replacing. Not sure wherther I'll replace the pans myself or whether I need to get a local shop to do the work.

The heater channels look solid, as does the rear cargo area.

Both doors are solid and rust free:

Long weekend coming, so further dis-assembly is planned. Goal to get the pan separated from the body.

What am I getting into here Smile

I'd say that you've got a 'good kid' and a nice project. Hope you take time to enjoy both. Applause

A little more work was done during the week and today.

I removed all the fenders, running boards and fuel tank.

Closer inspection showed that the heater channels are in really good shape on both side and there's very little rust anywhere (well apart from the rotten floor pans). All the bumper mounting points are rust free too. I thank my son for bringing home such a good rust free car.

Tomorrow's plan is to pressure wash the whole car down to remove some of the dirt, then prepare the car so that the body can be removed from the pan.

Worked on the car for the last couple of days. All the interior is now stripped. All wiring has been pulled and the body completely separated from the floor pan.

Pressure washed the transmission and rear suspension, as well as cleaning up the front.

Ordered new floor pans to replace the rusty ones. Hope to test fit and then weld the new ones in when my Father in law comes over in October. Then I'll feel if I'm starting to get somewhere.

Awesome work, you're really blowing through the break down stage!!

Side note, turn your boards that are supporting the body on their edge. Finding the body on the floor would not be the start of a good day Wink

Thanks for the tip. Yeah I noticed that, so I actually went out and bought two 4 x 4, so no sagging now.

Tomorrow's plan is to remove the front beam, clean it up, then primer it and then spray it gloss black (have to do something until the floor pans arrive).

Also go a few tips from a VW guy at Bugorama today, he suggested drilling out the old factory welds on the old floor pans, which make it easier to remove and install the new pans. I'll try that next weekend.

Use a proper spot weld cutter. They'll allow you to drill out the weld from the floor-pan side, without damaging / drilling through the chassis spine.

Your pans look pretty solid from the pics you have, I don't see any holes. It just looks like surface rust. Are you sure they need replacing?

X3.

If you throw your pocket change on the floor of your car and less than $1 worth lands on the ground, you don't yet need to replace your floor pans.

Oh I wish, I wish. The pans are pretty bad with holes all over the right hand side about the size of a quarter in six or seven places.

Did a little more work today. Took off the front beam, wire wheeled it, then sanded, cleaned it up and then put on two coats of primer.

Followed up with two coats of gloss. Looking much better now.

Also picked up a couple of spot weld cutters today, so I plan next week to pull the chassis out and start taking out the rotten pans.

Here's a few pics from today:

Here's a few close up pics of the right hand pan to show the holes. The left hand pan is better, but since I have the body off I may as well do both.
