Time to work under the hood. Up first was the brake reservoir lines.

I drained the excess brake fluid into a jar since the brake reservoir was installed down on the master cylinder and had to be moved. Then I installed the correct Blue brake hoses. I first placed the hard lines in the correct place and measured how long the hoses needed to be, and then cut them to length. I also put a little blue hose (about 1/4' long ) where the hard pipes go through the body to stop chaffing.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I then added a few zip ties (in blue of course) to tidy it all up and stop them vibrating:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Then it was time to install the hood. Wanted to get the hood out of the house and onto the Bug before it got scratched in the house.

I installed the seal first. I rubbed some WD40 onto the channel and seal and pushed the seal into the channel. It's a little fiddly, but pushing it in means you won't scratch the paint:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I trimmed the seal in the middle to fit together nicely:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Then I got an old comforter and put it on the body to stop it being scratched ad I lifted up the Hood. I got my wife to help me, which also minimizes the risk of scratching the hood or body:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I started with one side first and tightened the bolts up snug then moved to the other side and did the same.
Yay, the Hoods on without a scratch!!!

Need to square it up next weekend.

Started to assemble the rear today.

Started with the decklid, first I put the spring on, then I covered the rear of the Bug with blankets to stop the paint getting scratched.

I then lifted up the deck lid and screwed in one decklid bolt on one side. Then I connected the deck lid spring and attached it to the body. After that I "walked the decklid" onto the car by rotating it onto the car, then fixed the second bolt. I followed up with the other two bolts, and aligned the decklid and snugged down the bolts:

Here's the spring orientation:

Decklid is one:

Then I attached the decklid thermostat vent that sits under the license plate:
(I now know the thermostat is orientated incorrectly, I'll be fixing that later this week):

I then attached the license plate light housing, note I added some shrink wrap to the wires to make it neater:

Then fixed that to the decklid with a new seal:

Then my first rear fender was fitted:

Then finally the new smoked light housing (under the new light, is an OEM light bucket with the original seals, it now fits really well to the fender):

There's less and less parts on the shelf Smile

Just a few Minor odds and ends.

Got the last front fender mounted. Both front fenders are replacement aftermarket. The fit is pretty good and they are also pretty solid. Strangely one fender had a hole missing for the turn signal, but the other didn't.
I just had to drill it out. The headlight buckets are also pretty good in the fender. My original headlights screwed right in:

Sorted the error in my decklid thermostat. Had to take it a part and reassembly it correctly. Here's the correct orientation:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

When the engine compartment gets hot, it opens up the flaps behind the license plate to let the heat out:

Got the front bumper shocks mounted:

Finally I got the Hood latch release fitted with new stainless steel fasteners. In fact, almost all of my fasteners are stainless, there are expensive, but look good.
The hood release should be riveted, but I don't have a rivet gun (and I'm not buying one for a few rivets Smile ):

Your build looks great! Amazing and inspiring work! I love how the grey in the smoked rear lights picks up on the grey/silver paint on the sides. Have you thought about smoked front turn signals to tie it together? Just a thought. Keep up the great work. Can't wait to see the pics as you keep putting them up. Thanks for sharing. That first drive is going to be awesome!

Funny you should mention that, I'm still thinking about fitting smoked turn signals to tie it together. I've only held off since I haven't looked for smoked turn signals yet.

I'm going to start wiring soon (have to get the glass in first though). I'm going to try and document the wiring in more detail since very few threads actually show the re-wiring and I think it deserves a few pics.

A lot of tools shops might let you borrow a rivet gun for an afternoon. I would look around.

Incredible build! I've got to ask. Where did you get the blue tubes that fit over the brake lines as they move through the body?

Its just a small piece of the Blue Brake filler tube line. I just cut a piece off the end and slipped it over the steel pipes.

Time to install the Bumper.

I looked all over the place for a good used bumper, I pulled this bad boy off a 1974 Bug in pick n pull sometime ago. I cleaned it up and now it's ready to fit.

Install your bumper shock first, but leave them a little loose for now.

I found it easier to install the bumper brackets first (note how the bumper brackets "grip" the bumper):

AND ALSO NOTE:
The Bumper has a number of holes to mount the bracket, mount it using the INNER hole pair, rather than the OUTER hole pair, otherwise you will be re-doing it later (ask me how I know Brick wall )

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Then slide one end on first and add the bumper bracket bolt, washer and nut, just leave it a little loose for now.

Here's the bumper installed:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I then installed the bumper overriders, bumper strip and the license plate bracket. The bracket, I also pulled from the 74 Bug in pick n pull then cleaned it up and painted it:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Here's a side shot of the Bumper end pieces, these are reproduction, but they fit really well. Some say that the repro Bumper end pieces don't fit well, but mine did, maybe I got lucky Smile

Now square everything up and make sure the Bumper is level, then snug up all the bolts and brackets.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The front Bumper is done!

As far as I know it came with my car as standard from the dealer. I know my deck lid had the cut out in the metal work for the flap to fit into.

I kinda like it, sort of knowing that the flap will open if the engine bay heats up. And it's hidden behind the license plate Smile

My 76 bug front & rear bumpers had a total of 4, square rubber pads with a hole in the center for the mounting screws that go between the bumper & the bumpers mounts? Is that oem thing on the 74-79 cars? Confused Does anyone still use them on their bumpers Question

Mine are the same I believe, two pads for each Bumper with the hole in the center. These are OEM bumper overiders that I pulled off a 1974 Bug/

Got the final rear fender mounted today. Another good fit, should be, since this is the original fender to the car.

After mounting the fender, it was time to fit the final rear light, so I took a few quick pics.

Here's the fender mounted:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Here's the after market light, and on the left, the backing plate from an original rear light:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The backing plate goes on first, then the aftermarket light:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Here's the finished light with the lense fitted:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Time, now to mount the rear bumper. Again, I rescued this from a 1974 Bug, this time I purchased it from someone at Bugorama in May of this year. Pretty good for an original.
Same as the front Bumper, mount the brackets first onto the Bumper shocks:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Then just do the same as the front, square and level it all up, then snug everything down:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Given that I'm originally from the UK, I had to add the "GB" marker plate. My wife bought me this last year for Xmas. Feels good to be able to finally fit it to the car:

Where did you find the clear glass turn signals? I am looking for a set to install my fire department strobe lights. Thank you for any help you can offer.
