The challenge was getting enough fresh air into the type 3 engine..
.Type 3's pull air in from the back of the engine and blow it forward over the engine
What I have done is cut a hole in the rear metal so the fan can pull air in .
The original type 3 boot fit between the engine and the rear sheet metal ; the air is being pulled in from the sides THROUGH the rear bumper that has been modified . I cut the ends off the bumper and reduced the size of the bumper brackets to allow maximum air flow .
I am currently looking for a second rear bumper or equivalent channel to add to the back ; that is why the hole cutout can be seen under the bumper
The bumper wasn't bolted in when I took these photos , might look a little crooked
Now when I open the hatch I have access to the original type 3 engine hatch for minor adjustments
NOTE : the angle of this photo makes it VERY obvious how much extra room I will have with the type3 engine . Definitely worth the aggravation ( challenge )
For major work and easy engine removal ;
I remove the rear bumper and 6 screws and the back panel comes off allowing FULL access to the engine...I have a modified ATV jack and will be able to roll the engine out anytime
still need to make dipstick adaptation . I know what it needs ; just have to Find the fittings and do it _________________ 63 two fold rag

Started "regular " bodywork ; fill...sand ; fill....sand ; fill....sand ; prime....sand ; fill....sand .....you get the idea....
AND ; I'm doing it OUTSIDE in Florida ( body work makes too much mess and the dust screws up the Window AC I have in the garage )
About 3 o'clock the sun gets by my shade tree
; I got too hot and needed to seal the primer ( primer and filler will absorb moisture if left outside ) so I "wasted " two spray cans of rustoleum...purple and silver
What a difference...
The weight of the engine and internal deck pulled the rear end down . The back lower corners I welded in lowered it more .

looking good. The hole you put in the rear will not work as well as pulling air from the sides. The car when moving forward will create a low pressure spot & the fan will not be able to pull air in to cool. You should try to stick to VW's idea of air in from the side. I put a small squirrel cage fan in the side to draw air in for traffic situations. I turn the fan on & off as I see fit, pulls air in the vent to the engine fan. Keep up the great work, I like the 2 tone. |

Hello MR eyetzr
...The air into the engine is coming FROM THE SIDES .....Through the Channel INSIDE the modified rear bumper and the second bumper OR similar channel that I find and add under the first bumper...
Sounds a little crazy but I have measured the square inch opening of an original air duct and I will have more airflow than that......
I like the fan idea ; bilge pump fans move the most air for their size ; Does your fan block airflow when it isn't running _________________ 63 two fold rag

The fan turns easy I would guess the air flow will turn it as I drive. I will see if I can "watch" it with a camera when I get back on the road. |

You're definitely gaining on it. It's really coming around. The front sits too high though.
You could always make a "custom" license plate holder. You could cap up into the bumper you have, and mout the plate holder there. You'd need to wire in a "quick release" plug for the plate light, but that shouldn't be a problem. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

That's a GREAT idea !!!!!
Just ran out to garage...license plate measures 12 inches wide AND 6 inches high...
.I can go back to the shop with the sheet metal brake and make my own 6 inch high by 3 inch deep channel the width of the bus ; put the license plate in the middle ; get side plate lights ; and do something decorative to break up the visual of all that metal...tail lights ??
First a little math ; original bumper 4x5=20 square inches
then we add License plate channel 3x6=18 square inches
20+18= 38 square inches of ducting to pull air into the center is more than the 37 sq inches of the original type 3 squareback ducting
cool !
THANKYOU MR BOBNOTCH !!!!
p.s.---By the time I put in a fat grandpa and a tank of gas the front end should even itself out
Or I'll lift the back when I get the smoothies and higher tires on _________________ 63 two fold rag

Yeah, Bob sits out there in the wild north waiting for the first glimpse of spring. Lots of time to contemplate the issues of the world & all those nagging vw issues. I do the same when I run the snow blower up & down the lane. Come up with great ideas for stuff. Hey GP car/truck/van/delivery/craft is looking good! |

I went to the plumbing supply and came up with this oil dipstick/supply tube idea....
bad idea....oh well ; $13
but ; I did learn that a 3/4 pipe could be threaded into the existing metric pipe
back to the drawing board...........stay tuned
Derek ; Tail lights are WAY down on the to do list ; doors ; windshield ; plexiglass rear window ; wiring ; gas tank ; fenders ; front bumper ; headlights ; dash ; interior ; smoothies ; ..........stat tuned
Does anyone know why this picture would print so big ? ...I don't think I did anything different....... _________________ 63 two fold rag

Couldn't you something like that in hard drawn copper tubing? You'd have to silver braze the copper to the steel, but it shouldn't be that big a deal concidering how far you've gotten already. That black iron pipe looks awful heavy. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
