Quote ; bobnotch..." That black iron pipe looks awful heavy "

Great minds thinking alike...the weight of "phase one " rejected it from consideration . I am afraid that too much weight bouncing around on the two screws in the bottom of the block would eventually cause it to break off .

I will be looking for a "sweat" copper setup that can be threaded into the existing pipe ( I don't do " braze " ) . I will put in a bracket that comes out with the engine .

[ p.s. ] We didn't get the Detroit job . I won't be in your neighborhood to drop by Crying or Very sad

The plugs close off the air outlets in the fan housing which blow air into the heater boxes (HB). People sometimes put them on when going to an aftermarket exhaust to prevent losing the forced fan air to the outside. If you are keeping the HB instead of going with J-tubes, you MUST adapt some hoses to blow into the HB! The forced fan air blowing into the HB cools them down even if you have your heater knob off. Remember that the HB metal shells trap the hot air from the exhaust. The hot air will not leave the HB fast enough if you don't have this constant forced cool air blowing into the HB shells via the hoses. If you drive any length of time on the highway without the hoses into the HB, the exhaust heat will stay in the HB shells and can cause the heads (and the oil inside the pushrod tubes directly above the HB) to get too hot. I speak from experience on my Fastback...

BTW the Type 3s had cooling air coming to the fan intake by routing through the inner parts of the rear APRON (part of the body; can also be referred to as the tail panel), not the rear bumper.

You're doing mighty fine constructive work on your type6!

Rome ; GREAT info !!! I would have driven around oblivious to a problem that I can now correct.
..Florida life doesn't require heated cars ............................... I will be replacing the muffler / exhaust anyway and can go with J tubes with heat deflectors .
Thanks

He already knows this Roland, but he's already limited in rear of the vehicle to engine space (had he known this before, he would have made the rear of the SD longer). This is why he's looking at drawing air thru the modified bumper, and possibly adding a box below the bumper to get enough air into the engine. Wink

I see I'm a little late to the party- have you considered using the bus air scoops as cooling air inlets for the engine? If they can satisfy a 2L bus they should be able to satisfy your engine?

This might give you an idea what I came up against
[img][/img]
The challenge was getting enough fresh air into the type 3 engine..
.Type 3's pull air in from the back of the engine and blow it forward over the engine
What I have done is cut a hole in the rear metal so the fan can pull air in .
The original type 3 boot fit between the engine and the rear sheet metal ; the air is being pulled in from the sides THROUGH the rear bumper that has been modified . I cut the ends off the bumper and reduced the size of the bumper brackets to allow maximum air flow .
I am currently looking for a second rear bumper or equivalent channel to add to the back ; that is why the hole cutout can be seen under the bumper

it's been a challenge ; but that's why I do this stuff Very Happy Very Happy

I have been watching this rear build and I was wondering what if you lower the bumper and then have your air intake/bumper combo? I think you could tweak the bumper brackets and get enough air in to cool. It looks like you have the bumper right against the body, add a little scoop to the 1/4 panel.

what you missed is the ends have been cut off the original type 3 bumper to allow more air to flow AND the bumper brackets were re-engineered to allow more air flow too..

remember the rear bumper is NOT bolted into place in the above pictures

.the bumper will stay where it is and a 6inch license plate holder / air duct will be added under it . The combined new ducting will allow more airflow than the original type3 ducting did...stay tuned Cool

I'm not shure what you mean ; but the " one year build thread " still has 3 months left on the schedule . Wink

I am always torn between "hurry and finish " and " what will I do when it is done " Rolling Eyes

An other dilemma is ; more work this year than any in the 17 years I have been doing this...good news ; bad news , money to play Volkswagens , not as much time in the garage .
.It's really difficult to get a lot done when your sitting in a hotel 1605 miles away from home......My exciting 4th of July plans include walking around in the Mall of America with two other guys who would rather be home ... Very Happy Sad Confused

I think I could suggest something here, finish for you, drive the tires off it. My other thought is start another, but not sure if that is good. I think the project looks on schedule, might be a little over if you "keep working" Keep it up & enjoy the walk. Laughing

it's not a rear bumper . I it"s an air duct for a type 6
The height was determined by the spacing I have to get air into the type 3 engine
