A Google spreadsheet for the entire Samba member recommended "local restaurants and eatin' joints" can be seen here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11bmPbm_8rkn6AoDWbYmVgk-lW3HoWSpbeXotJYnBGs8/edit?pli=1#gid=0
I've been thinking about this topic.
Its inspired a little by my youth traveling with my Pop as an independant owner/operator trucker every summer. During our runs, we always seemed to be unloaded right around lunch time. Pop would always ask for the local spots to hit for great food. You know.... the type of spot where they know you and what you want as soon as you hit the door.
So we'd drop the trailer, and Bobtail it, ..or after unloading (insert here: just about any piece of heavy equipment inmaginable) hit those spots.....
Sure mis those days...
NOW In my travels, I always try to do the same, ask around and spot those places. Off the main, secret and known to the locals, food thats just.. ...... perfect.
Can't get more local than the VW owners, I bet you know of some spots.
Let this be our own Diners, Drive Ins and Dives for the Samba.
No chain stores..
What and where are your favorite local go to joints?
and
What's your favorite food there?
My somewhat close and local favorites.
The Sub Corral
Belmont N.C.
Deli/Pizza joint.
(Formerly Boston Native Owned)
Closest taste to a traditional Deli I've found around here.
My choices
1) Ham, Salami and Cheese, Sub bread, all the way, no Ketchup, No Mustard, No Mayo.. Want it lighter.. get the same on Pita Pocket (2 Iron)
2)Pastrami, Onions both grilled, with melted Provolone Cheese, Spicy Brown (German) Mustard, toasted sub..
3)Pepperoni Pizza Pie, (close to NY/Jersey Pie), cold beer on Saturday Nights.
Taste T Drive In
Shelby N.C.
(No Indoor Seating and Cash Only)
Some of the best Burgers around
Double Decker Cheeseburger Basket
Mustard, Chili, Onions, Fries and a Big Iced Tea.. _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}

Nick's Taste of Texas
Covina, Ca
Tex-Mex
Housed in an old converted warehouse with full bar and two stages for bands.
My choice:
Taco lunch special; Two soft tacos with your choice of meats, but the beef fajitas are my hands down favorite. Served on hand made flour tortillas. Comes with your choice of two sides and a drink.
http://www.nickstasteoftexas.com/
Pepe's Finest Mexican Food
Downey, Ca (one of four locations)
Some of the very best traditional Mexican food I've ever eaten.
Walk up window, casual outdoor patio dinning
My choice:
Green Chile Burrito; tender chunks of pork roast slow simmered in a Verde sauce
Side of French Fries.
(If you've never had French Fries with Mexican food you don't know what you are missing )

Ole' 96er'
" If i can get a dessert down him, think you can
throw in a couple of Paul Bunyan hats for the kids?"
I had all you can eat (good) Prime Rib once... absolutley the last time I ever did that.. 2... 16 ouncers... down...
Couldnt even lay down to feel good..
I love Prime Rib.
My local goto joint that set the bar in Prime Rib for me closed 16 years ago.. I've found a couple places (not local) that come close.. but not quite.
One of the better Prime Ribs I've found recently,
Flamingo Grill
Myrtle Beach SC.
Nice Old 50's Neon Atmosphere
Lots to Choose from on the Menu
Prime Rib for me..
If you like the NC Style BBQ. or what is commonly refered as "Pulled Pork"
Speedy's Barbeque
Lexington NC.
Awesome sized sandwiches or plates and the BBQ slaw is killer.
Insert droooling smiley.... here. _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}

"The Tav" in Ellensburg, Washington -
Try the "Super Mother" or if your lucky, it's prime rib night. Also one of the few quality establishments that carry Rainier Beer on tap.
The "Peacock" in Corvallis, Oregon -
Crappy student night scene, but a fantastic quiet/mellow $2.00 breakfast. Opens at like 7am I think. |

Way Station Coffee Shop, Newhall, CA.
My usual, Ham and Eggs:
Yes, they have at least one plate from every state and province on the walls.
If you go on a weekend there will likely be a line. It's worth the wait.
Crazy Otto's diner, Acton and Lancaster, CA (and other places, from what I hear):
Prime Rib and Eggs:
Gone but not forgotten, the Pines Cafe in Pearblossom, CA
So small and busy that their motto was "Eat and Get Out"

Not my photo, I don't have my phone from the last time I was there, but Manuel's El Tepeyac on Evergreen Ave in the city of Los Angeles is the best place to go if you're a Mexican food junkie. And the burritos...
Just look for yourself!!!!

I generally wont draw lines on that topic...
I no doubt like a vinegar based sauce, but it cant be sweet.
Id have to lean a little toward the East "Q" though..
Lightly wet meat, add Texas Pete, BBQ slaw, toasted bun...
Makes a great sandwich.
3 of my favorites spots across the ole North State IN order..
Speedys Barbeque
Lexington NC
Short Sugar's Pit Bar-B-Q
Reidsville NC
Red Bridges BBQ Lodge
Shelby NC _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}
