I dont know the company, so I started searching Black Bear Diner in the areas you mentioned to add to the list, there were quite a few.
61 in 8 states (and growing) so this below listed. Seems like a family owned chain.
http://blackbeardiner.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Where-Oh-Where-December-2013.pdf
http://blackbeardiner.com/

If a mistake has been made and its the wrong company Ill correct it.. Im only going on vague information.

I love White Castle Hamburgers... They are family owned...and not a franchise.. but its a chain. I wont list them because its WAY more than a simple local unknown which is why I wanted to start this topic.

Id say if there are 2-3 business's within the same general area thats fine, but it if starts to span states and numerous repeats, thats a chain, and defeats the true purpose of this thread.

I appreciate all who have contributed and personally look at them all and will apply the locals accordingly.

Now alphabatized

I am surprised that no one has mentioned Emma Jean's Hollandburger Cafe

If you are going to the Keys, stop here for lunch.

I used to live and work in Tavernier a few miles south. Great food, a bit touristy but worth the stop.

Iowegan, I ate there once! Totally random stop on my way between LA and UT. Pretty impressive airliner graveyard in Victorville too.

Volkswagenut, I'm sure your research is correct. The original diner in Shasta is still in the family (at least it was when I passed thru a few years back), as is the one in Medford. I can't vouch for the others, and it wouldn't surprise me if they franchised out their MO.

Dick's Drive In (5 locations in Seattle) would be another for the list if it isn't already on it. Good cheap burgers fries and shakes.

Santa Rosa, Sonoma county, CA

edit: none of these places have age limits and it is common for people to bring their kids to enjoy the wonderful atmosphere (of downtown especially) and food that these breweries offer.

if you do ever find yourself in Santa Rosa, you'd be a fool to not park your car and walk around downtown till you find a place that suits you. There is a mall there too, places to grab desert. I used to not like living here, but now that I moved closer to the heart of this not so big city and turned 21, we have a blast in the summer on our bicycles, since there is all the bomb beer around I find sometimes my car only moves to go to work during the week....because I'm to lazy to ride the 13 miles each way.

3rd street aleworks in downtown, great freshly brewed beer, delicious burgers, personal pizzas, GARLIC fries (around here we live on ale and garlic fries, or wine and appetizers). My favorites are the calamari ceasar salad, with a side or garlic fries, or the sourdough burger with bacon and jack cheese...and garlic fries. $15/pitcher $10-25 entrees.

Russian River brewing Co. In downtown- world renowned fresh beer here, once a year for 2 weeks they brew Pliney the younger, its so good people come from all over to get a glass, which is limited to 3 10oz glasses @10% alch. (a day) its a triple IPA that's so good it got to the point the last couple years that the line is 12 hours long! Rain or shine! Great pizza, and lots of other good food. My favorite is the beer bites or pizza. $15(?)/pitcher $13-25 entrees

La Vera pizza. A bit of an upscale Italian/pizza place, very romantic in a small old school building in downtown. Great food, good wine picks. Pizza is really good. $18-30 entree

La Gare in old railroad square downtown, very romantic, very pricey French cuisine, there is a good chance you'll need a reservation. Full 5 course meals with entrees costing $23-30➕.excellent wine, excellent service, excellent gourmet food. My favorite is the veal cordon blue, and a chocolate moose (making me drool) for desert, quiche Lorraine for appetizer. Cone on an empty stomach and leave not being able to eat another bite of your leftovers.

choose just about any Mexican joint, most of them are great.
Puerto Vallarta on Cleavland Ave. Has great authentic Mexican food, they have a full bar, serve margaritas, Mai tais etc... On weekends they have live mariachi music there.

Simply Vietnam on S. Dutton ave. Imo is the best Vietnamese food in town, my favorite is the BBQ lemon chicken over rice, but you must try their pork meatballs as well.

Mombos pizza has 3 locations but they are all owned by the same person and are still local tho they have places in 3 different towns (we are close proximity to several other towns all 5-15 mins from Santa Rosa) delicious pizza by the slice or whole, NY style, crunchy on the edges, foldable slices. I think you can get a large for around $18

Marys pizza shack, again have several resurants but was started (and I'm pretty sure still is localy/family owned) Never fails to satisfy, this place is more of a restaurant that also serves Italian food like pasta, soup, salad etc. Some serve hard drinks. $13-23 entrees

La Tiendita, San Clemente, Ca. Mexican food hole in the wall. Lots of locals. People either love it, or hate it Confused Cheap, fast, good.

The Way Station Coffee Shop is actually located at 24377 Main St, Newhall, CA 91321

It is currently on the spreadsheet as being in San Diego, about 150 miles distant!

Corrected... I guess there's more than one.. ??
That why posting a specific location is important (and you did GeorgeL)...
Sometimes.. a name is just a name..
Posting the name and location.. is key.
I was trying to correct some mistakes yesterday while resourcing this post and the list.. That is one (of a few) that slipped by.
Thanks. !!

Exclamation Ok.... I have found SEVERAL that are on the Spreadsheet that Andrew started that are NOT here in this topic..
PLEASE.. ad the information here only and I can keep the spreadsheet organized.
That way there are really 2 accessible and accurate resources.

A great VW drive and destination for Lunch or Dinner in the middle of Central California. If you ride bicycles, bring your bike and ride the country roads. This is also wine country with lots of little wineries to sample.

Loading Chute
6350 Webster Rd, Creston, CA 93432
(805) 237-1259

Of course with a name like "Loading Chute" there are steaks but great pizza and seafood. Simple with excellent quality.

I used to frequent this joint when I worked in Mt Holly.
Haven't been in a while though.

In Rutland, Vt there are 3 places that come to mind

First is the Killington Deli on Killington Ave, about half a block east of Main St.
Bob and Becky are true foodies and make delicious sandwiches, salads and soups. No disappointments. Open M-F only. no weekends.

Second is an absolute Rutland institution; Gills Deli on Strongs Ave. been here forever, on its second generation family ownership. Gills is known for their great grinders.

Third is another Rutland institution, Ted's Pizza on State Street. I'm not really a fan of Teds as I grew up on ny style pizza. But Rutland area families love it. The place is packed on weekends. Teds is also on its second generation family ownership. Dan Timinski, the musician who sang George Clooney's part in 'O Brother,WhereArt Thou?', recently came back to Rutland to perform. One thing he said was he couldn't wait to take his band mates to Teds to get some pizza.
I thought that was funny because here's a guy who has been all over performing and he couldn't wait to get back to Teds.
